Hi there,

I am going on a driving holiday to France this summer and I want to get an SUV to carry the family. An older, well maintained Honda CRV diesel was my choice (around an 06 plate) with one owner and FSH. I am looking to spend £5000. The issue I have is not knowing whether, with the new diesel MOT regs etc, I would just be wasting £5k as I would need to keep the car for 2-3 years.

I think getting a petrol SUV would be too expensive on fuel for not only the trip but my daily commute of 40 miles. What do people think?

There's a reasonable bet the Dual Mass Flywheel and clutch will explode on a diesel CRV of this age and mileage - I'd steer clear unless it's cheap enough to cover the rectification of failure. If you do insist on sourcing a diesel CR-V of this vintage - double check the rear prop is fitted, as when the rear diff goes the "fix" is often to chuck the prop-shaft in the skip to mask the fault. Also change the brake fluid the day you buy it - ABS module corrosion from moisture contaminated brake fluid is not uncommon.

Actually, do youself a favour and just buy petrol Toyota RAV-4 instead. (Yes it might burn a bit of oil, but it'll go on forever.)

My wife bought a new Focus 1.0 125 Titanium estate in October 16 and paid the £250 to include sat nav .

When we got the car we discovered that the maps loaded in the car were at least a year out of date. In particular it ommitted a new road near our home which saves much time reaching the M57. That road was completed in 2014 and appeared on Google maps within two weeks.... Read more

Place in ebay that sells them at £22 and works a treat. There's various ones on there and some are apparently rogue but this one is fine.

Just because it works doesn't mean that it isn't a counterfeit ......

HI, this is driving me nuts! I can find lots of posts about warning lights but none that seem to match my issues.

Four weeks ago I filled up with Asda diesel and I got a 'Check Injection System/Emissions' message (with spanner). Car went into limp mode so I plopped a bottle of Redex DPF cleaner in. Took car to garage and light went out on the way. No error codes found once plugged in. Car was fine for next two weeks.... Read more

Dear Mrs O'Connor

You actually knocked the nail on the head in your first submission: Asda diesel....

Hi,

We’re considering getting my wife a new used car. Our budget is £11,000 and we have decided on getting a C-Max.

She only does around 6-8k a year so it’s Petrol territory only and we’ve narrowed it down to either the 1.6 125 or the 1.0 Ecoboost. But I’m put off by all the horror stories on the Ecoboosts.

But are they really that bad? Considering Ford install them across the range and have done for nearly 7 years?

Thanks,

Found this whilst looking for something else. Might be worth checking if you're in the market for an Ecoboost.

Hi all,

I currently have a Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dci and looking to get another diesel in the next few months.

Preferably diesel and automatic.

I like the fact that my current Qashqai has active DPF so it allows me to do short journeys as well as long ones.

I like the Nissan Xtrail as it would suit my needs with a growing family and being over 6ft.

Are there any other cars that have this Active DPF technology as I cant seen to find anything on the web other than what Active DPF tech is?

Thanks

I guess it depends on how you define "clean running" but the diesel Qashqai has been reported to be one of the most polluting cars in terms of NOx output, being in band H on the EQUA database.

I have a new Seat Leoon ST company car and it's decent to drive but one of the things that annoys me about it is the engine drone which becomes quite noticeable at motorway speeds. It's a 1.6 diesel engine. Is this common with cars these days? I'm wondering if SEat Leon's have always been like this or are they trying to save money and weight by reducing soundproofing? I believe they are, to varying degrees, as are (even more so) full winter tyres, and why they have higher levels of tread than 'summer' tyres, because, outside of winter, they wear quicker.

The Goodyears are more 'traditional' all-season tyres, more biased towards the winter than summer, and as such work better in colder conditions (as well as snow and ice) than the Michelin CrossClimate range, which is a summer-baised all-season tyre (but which works increasingly better when the temperature is above 7deg C)....

If it fluctuates between 12.6 and 14.9v then this is normal with many a modern car.

Correct, that is exactly what our Kia, BMW and Seat did, not checked either Nissan or Skoda....

Hello,

I have a 2007 ford Fiesta and have noticed that I have a misaligned rear bumper. When I push the bumper back up the gap goes but doesn't stay in place. Does anyone know if this sort of gap is repairable or if its worth doing the repair? ... Read more

OOps! Well, actually, yes. My back bumper got knocked by someone who parked too close, so I had to have that one off, too. The nearside fixing clip on mine is broken, so it was showing a gap, like the OP's, but I've used a panel clip or spire nut, do you call them? -- Just looked 'em up on e-Bay and they're called 'speed fastener U nuts or spire nuts'.

Again, you need to take the clips off the arch liner and pull it away from the bumper on each side. It's easier to get at the screw on each side with the wheels off. ...
