Giving my car a recent spring clean -I have discoved the most amazing cheap car accessory which helps access difficult areas when cleaning carpets, removes reluctant dust from nooks and crannies on a dashboard, details up areas that might need a shine and even carefully helps remove grime in an engine bay. So what is this magic tool, is it available in a motorists shop at an extortionate £Price?...No-It's a toothbrush. Absolutely brilliant.... Read more

I do use a toothbrush occasionally - especially for getting into the tricky bits of alloy wheels. For algae and greenstuff on windowsills I find a bigger stiff brush is better.

Hello guys,

Occasionally when I start my car I will see white smoke/cloud which will then disappear 5 seconds later. It doesn't do this every time. I mostly notice it when it's been standing a while. Any ideas?

It's something that's been happening for some time, even after MOTs and services. A friend told me it's excess fuel burning. The car drives well, idles fine and apart from a few seconds on the occasional start up it never happens while driving. No black or blue smoke either.

Thanks in advance.

White smoke from a diesel exhaust means that the injection timing is retarded during the starting sequence to make starting easier. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Hi my 2001 VW Bora 1.9TDI has recently been very sluggish and has not been picking up speed as it used to. In 1st 2nd and 3rd gear it seems to pick up speed fine but then there is not much response once it goes in to 4th gear. Especially going up a hill it really struggles. I dont know wether its the turbo or that the vaccum hose could be clogged up. Please advise. Read more

I have been told that it could be the vaccum hose or the pressure sensor, I have the car booked in on wednesday at the garage so hopefullyit will be resolved soon.

Let's get real here. I've been driving for over fifty years and never experienced an airbag go off (OK they've been around for less than half of my driving time). I expect I've less than twenty years driving left. So what's the probability of me seeing one go off?

Risk assessment involves probability AND consequence. What happens if the airbag either fails to operate or goes off spontaeously? ...

Thank you for your reply’s. I told the buyer the truth. He isn’t happy but accepted the deposit back plus 20 quid for fuel. Afterwards he came back stating that he had paid to transfer his insurance over and sold his other car. Mine wasn’t booked in to have the mot done until Wednesday and had it failed he wouldn’t have brought it anyway so I find this is probably unlikely.

Sounds like he was not too happy but accepted your reasons and took his money back and then spoke to a mate who talked him into coming back to you and try and get some more cash out of you. You've done all you can now. If he sold his car and transfered the insurance then that is his problem and not yours.

As far as CO2 emissions and fuel consumption figures are concerned VW are only slightly grey angels BMW/Mini are black. I also understand from I think a BBC investigation that the new Tiguan diesel produces very little poisonous NO2 but the Renault/ Nisan Diesel produces much in excess of its tested/quoted levels of NO2.

Well, that is the start of the F1 circus once more. Every year i watch, i try to get into it, hope it gets exiting, but it usually doesn't. That was very much the case in the opening race. I ended up fast forwarding most of the highlights in the vain hope of finding something interesting.

Any thoughts from Back Roomer's on how to make it exciting?, also, what are the backroomer's preferred choice of motorsport?... Read more

I love F1. More like a game of chess I reckon.
I do admit that there should be more overtaking.
But real not faked helped by DRS.
Not really into MotoGP.
Reminds me of basketball where the scores can finish at 89-91.
Lots of overtaking but doesn’t necessarily get you anywhere.
At least bikes don’t have Halos - yet.

I have recently tried to replace spark plugs and find that all plugs listed by on-line suppliers for my car have a 14mm dia. thread which just fall into the existing plug hole. The old plug is marked NGK TR 5A-10 and I have measured it as having thread diameter 15mm approx. and is also visibly larger diameter.
Strangely, when I look up technical details of a NGK TR 5A-10 plug on-line it seems to be specified as being suitable for my car, and is stated to be 14mm thread ! So why is the Plug removed from my car at least 1mm larger than 14mm and yet identified as NGK TR 5A-10 ? And where can I be sure to get the right plug ? Read more

Are all the plugs the larger size? had it before that a car had been helicoiled after a stripped thread and it came out with the plug instead of staying in the head

Good thinking, Jagman, I think you have the answer, the OP needs someone to re-helicoil the plug hole. As a temporary fix screw the old plug back in.

Check the CV joints aren’t dry, other than that it’s possibly the diff which is fairly common on these. If it needs a gearbox they’re easy to come by but with a sub £500 value it’d be easier to just buy another one.
