Hello,
I run the tank down to 10miles remaining and since then it has cut out on hills and had some stutters when around 1000rpm.... Read more

Hello. I'm planning to buy a car from local garage/dealer (actually I've made a deposit already). I haven't signed up a deal yet, but it turned out that the MOT was about to expire and garage claimed to have the car pass it before the deal is made (not as an additional service, but as a part of the sale, as advertised). The question is - can I be charged additionally for any repairs needed for MOT to be passed?
Thanks,

If in doubt walk away.

The left foot auto braking debate rumbles on, I use the right foot foot for the accelerator and the brake. It feels natural, when braking the right foot is removed from the accelerator removing any chance of increasing forward motion. I have tried left foot braking on a quiet road and I find it's nowhere near as controlled or instinctive as the right foot. Manual drivers use the right for the accelerator and the brake so why change if you get an auto? I don't doubt some people are fine with the left foot, what do other auto drivers think? Read more
I was recently castigated for left-foot braking. Actually just touching the brake pedal to get the brake lights illuminated when being tailgated-as so often happens. It usually works especially if you accelerate at the same time bt the idiots usually get wise to this so I then slow down to a speed where 5 yards = 2 seconds until they get the message.
For anyone used to driving a manual the left foot is used to operate the clutch which requires a bit of effort so if you used your left foot on the brake you would probably skid to a very sudden halt. It feels less controlled to me especially with the designer's propensity for very sensitive brake servos these days....
A friend has a problem with her automatic transmission. The car was apparently behaving normally with all forward gears available. As she was parking the car she tried to select reverse, the T-bar moved but reverse would not engage.
The rescue service mechanic said he was puzzled because the the car crept forward when Neutral was selected. Later examination at a garage revealed the transmission fluid to be black.... Read more
Unless the cure is a simple adjustment of the selecor I would scrap it and replace with one of the dozens of Astra automatics available online for a few hundred pounds.
Driving on the A14 last night at 9.30pm, eastbound just after the fixed speed camera after the A11 joins in the Cambridge/Newmarket area i spotted a speed camera van parked up in the next layby, right at the beginning and sitting away from the kerb as they do when working.
Do they work at night? is this a new tactic or my paranoia? Read more
HS2 is a useless vanity project, there must be cheaper ways to increase rail capacity. (Re-open the old Great Central route?)
I disagree that HS2 is a vanity project, it is much needed and should be built (but to 185 mph not 250 mph would be fast enough)...
Shame that Vauxhall is no longer a Vauxhall, despite reassurances that it’s been ‘a brand since 1903’. That’s all it is now and I presume this will have some form of Peugeot/Citroen engine. Some people love to diss Vauxhalls but I’ve had some excellent examples, my favourite being a 1983 Carlton estate. Lovely car in which we covered 93,000 miles before moving it on. Read more
The sage wrote something about automatic gearboxes v/s manual. I read it once and was impressed by the brevity, clarity and style of his writing. I also remember that it was forthright. Do any of the BRs have a clue as to where to find the text ? Read more
All are rare now, especially in this country.
There is a Dutch "Gumtree" sort of site, where they are known to appear occasionally - www.marktplaats.nl/...
It suddenly started making this loud rythmic sound. I made a 13 second video of it, and it's on my onedrive at this link: 1drv.ms/v/s!AmGtZYDBXzj8hZJKBUxPwb-JFphOaw

Oooh that sounds horrible... however, I reckon it's the crank pulley - the aux belt looks all rusty on the back....

Hmm, just had a second thought. Does the Fabia have a saddle tank with a pump transferring fuel between either side? If that has failed you'll get some wierd issues if the tank is not fullish.
[Edit] Don't think this an issue with the Fabia - the Yeti has a saddle tank though...
