How can I get into the driver's door or bonnet of a 2005 (K12) Nissan Micra automatic?

Its battery has been removed for charging and its nearside is close to a house wall.

I can move the bonnet safety catch with a screwdriver but as far as I can tell it will not release the bonnet.

I can open the nearside door but not enough to get into the car but I can get my arm in and, with a hooked pole, put a small pull force on the internal bonnet lever and the driver's door lever but neither appear to do anything. The bonnet may open with more force on its internal lever than I have so far been able to exert.

In theory I could connect the charged battery to something to activate the door locks but where can I find a satisfactory connection point?

Any advice would be appreciated? Read more

Now resolved.

Thanks to all those here who tried to help.

Working alone I raised the rear of the Micra, one side at a time, using a 2x3x90 inch piece of wood as a lever combined with several bricks and much smaller pieces of wood. When raised I put a 17 inch square piece of hardboard, rough side down, with a piece of polythene on top under each wheel. With bricks as spacers I used the piece of wood to lever the nearside rear wheel well away from the wall.

When in the car I was able to pull the bonnet release with sufficient force to open the bonnet. The driver's door would still not open at this stage so I assume it was deadlocked - I will investigate this further later.

I had already charged the battery with a very old Netgear 12 volt DC power supply. Not recommended to anybody without sufficient electrical experience. This power supply had an open circuit voltage considerably higher than 12 volts. Charging progress was monitored with a digital multimeter.

The Micra now appears to work OK.

I must remember not to park so close to walls especially without the car being used for several weeks. I am not sure if the inside light was left on but I will check this more carefully in future.

I don't like leaving the bonnet unlatched even with the battery removed - perhaps I will investigate an emergency way of opening it from outside of the car. An emergency 12 volt input point outside of the car may also have its uses.

I have a Cardale garage door which is usually operated by a remote fob. Because the current fob has chosen to fail I cannot transfer the code to another fob. I, therefore, decided to open the garage door manually (there is no other access to the garage). There is a keylock/handle towards the bottom of the door which turns about 45 degrees and not the expected 90 degrees and the door will not open. Is it not opening because the garage mechanism is engaged and will only open electrically with the fob?

Thanks. Read more

I'm wondering if its just the button that has 'failed', possibly due to build up of dirt/dust between the button contact and circuit board. I had this problem with a remote control for my DVD player, and so, following the instructions from a video on YouTube, I opened the remote up, took the rubber botton tray off and cleaner it (the side facing the PCB) and the PCB contacts with car electrical contac spray cleaner (onto cotton buds) as I couldn't easily source any isopropyl alcohol in small quantities.

Lo and behold, after a bit of fiddling to get the control pad open, it now works as new again, admitedly with a few scratches in getting the plastic halves apart by prising them open. Not sure if you could attempt something similar - perhaps someone more qualified than myself on electricals may want to chime in with an opinion....

I seem to be spending a lot of time on here lately ????

My partner has recently purchased the above vehicle from a VW dealership. There is a strange phenomenon with the headlights. During the day, the lenses look completely clear. At night when the headlights are on, we can see little dots (not condensation) on the inside of the lenses. The garage has looked into it, but has been rather dismissive, saying "it's not interfering with the beam". Has anybody experienced this problem? The car is immaculate for it's year (13 reg) and consequently has a year's full VW warranty.... Read more

Interestng to read the comment about the 1 Series in the snow. I wonder if part of the problem is the car being so light? My 435d has X-Drive and standard tyres and it's been surprisingly grippy and stable on the recent snow and ice - even on the hills of Sheffield and the higher stretches of the A68. Read more

I had 9 year old Mercedes SLK for which the Mercedes dealership supplied a similar vague, enormous estimate to fix an oil leak.
Correct Advice from a small garage was to replace the oil filler cap as the rubber seal may harden allowing oil leakage over the engine. total cost £6.

Glad you avoided a collision with the lorry but remember that if you are involved in an accident in Germany where you were travelling at more than 130 kmh, you will be held at least partially liable. 250 kmh on a two lane autobahn with other traffic might have been considered reckless. Read more

With regard to keyless entry, it's worth reminding readers that as well as keeping the key fob in a safe place, ideally out of range of isolated in a tin box, they also need to keep the spare fob in a similarly isolated location. Ideally a different place.

Advice worked a charm. Called up leasing company and said I intended to reject the car. Within 10 minutes I had a call back saying they would pay for the fix (I had a quotation on paper from Hyundai for £90+vat)

Hi,

The other day I stupidly put about 100ml of screenwash in the brakefluid reservoir before realising my mistake (early morning/new car!). I didn’t think much of it and drove to work. Googled it, found out it’s pretty dangerous, so booked it in for a brake fluid flush and replacement the next morning. Overall, I probably drove about 12-15 miles with the brakefluid ‘contaminated'.... Read more

Brake fluid can damage paint badly but it depends on the paint! - I remember the days of Triumph Heralds and Spitfires where the brake and clutch master cylinders were mounted on a painted horizontal surface - some had evidence of stripped paint from spills!
