Car has just passed MOT with no problems (175k miles) and got treated to a valet. I had been idly considering what to replace her with (if new, Dacia or Kia Picanto) and got to thinking about modern cars (as you do) and alleged power outputs.

Being of a certain age, I look at (for example) a Fiesta with 100 or 125 bhp. That's the sort of power to weight ratio of a sports car but now seems to be the norm.... Read more

If you add more power to a car you make it faster in a straight line. If you want to utilise that extra power fully, you need bigger brakes, better tyres, stiffer suspension. All of which are going to add weight and make it less efficient.

If you reduce the weight of the car, you make it faster EVERYWHERE. You don't need bigger brakes, better tyres, or stiffer suspension as there is less mass to contain. In addition, the car will be more efficient....

My partner had her Mini Countryman serviced and MOT’d last year, at three years old. It was booked in for a three year service under the service plan, but it turns out this wasn’t done (we didn’t spot this as the service light had been turned off, and there was a bunch of other work undertaken which we were more focussed on, but that’s a different cash horror story).

It’s only just come to our attention that it’s now 13k miles over its oil change date, prompted by a need to top up the oil last week, an engine fault warning this week, and a need to check things ready for its MOT.

The garage are denying that going over the oil service could’ve caused the engine fault, but that’s not obvious to me. I’m a techy person, but not really knowledgable on the detail of Car maintenance.

Can anyone offer a view on the position we should take with the garage? We are still “owed” a service, otherwise we wouldn’t be going back!
Thanks in advance, Read more

So if it did not get an oil change at 3 years that is not automatically wrong, it only needs one if the dash says so. But if the oil light has been on for 15,000 miles you have been very foolish.......

.......especially if it is one of those Brummy-built 'prince' engines with grotty cam chains notorious for wearing and then lengthening if not kept well lubricated. ...

Ok - they've done the lead in petrol, then the plant food gas, then NOX, then diesel particulates. All have been good for inventing new taxes for governments to fill their coffers.

Next it's pollution from tyres.... Read more

So you like the smell of raw excrement and rotting heaps of bone (even worse would be shellfish) not to mention woodsmoke in your hair and urine soaked clothes?

How quaint....

The UK market seems wholly distorted by the PCP machine.

It seems to have hugely favoured the German makes to sell access to £40k+ cars to people who barely look able to afford much more than an ordinary second hand car. I’m continuously amazed by who I see sitting in or getting out of shiny BMWs, Evoques and Mercedes Benzes in the average, not even up market, supermarket car park, their youth in particular and relative ordinariness is obvious.

Will the whole pcp thing end? I don’t understand what’s propping it up. It looks like smoke and mirrors especially in a world of stagnated wages, rising energy and food costs.

Can backroomers see a future when the prestige Germans aren’t everywhere and where their customers start to resemble their older customers of times gone by who were 20 years older and more obviously comfortably off professional types rather than anyone who can sign an agreement.

What will the ex PCPers do? Go back to buying. 3-5 year old mainstream makes for cash or with a bit of HP? Read more

With my highish mileage I ignore depreciation - I presume I'm nearly giving the car away at the end. eg with my previous car:-

So I had this happen to me. I was scrolling on my music app on a phone holder when I saw a police jeep come up behind me. I automatically switched it off and continued driving but they didn't pull me over. After that I was driving but it kept on following me. I drove 40mph in a 40 zone but the jeep was driving at 30. Whilst I couldn't see them I quickly hid the phone on the seat so that they wouldn't see it. Got to a T junction where I want left and they turned right. My basic question is, have I been caught and will I get a notice what with the phone laws getting stricter here? Read more

That's true because I panicked when I saw them again before the T Junction. Is it normally 2 weeks to wait for PCN or is it longer?
