My adored Velocity tires are reaching the finish of their lives, and they were the best tires Ive at any point had. Issue is, Yokohama dont make them any longer Even madder since they were a deal at £60 a piece!

Hi, I’m looking to buy a 2nd car for my son to learn to drive in. I thought I’d found one but it’s Cat n, light damage nothing structural. I’ve already had an insurance quote and they didn’t ask me about this, is that because they’ll know too from the car reg number or don’t they care? Was actually going to go ahead with a different insurer via compare the market but now I’m panicking I should have said something and the insurance is going to go through the roof. Does anyone have any advice?
Thanks very much Read more
Whilst it is always wise to be careful on ANY car you want to buy, straight or insurance claim, never trust anyone at face value. ALWAYS geta hpi report because the price includes a warranty on the report as claimed. If you dont know anything about cars get someone who does to take a looksee. My car is a £3000 ish value and was attacked with an iron bar leaving around 3 or 4 £1 coin size little dents, purely cosmetic and could easily be filled if required, and you want to pay of course. The Insurance assesors decided it would cost £3800 to pain the dents (b*******) but that was ok as I got offered an £1800 settlement + £800 leave car with them. I took the money and kept the car. Its exactly the same car and the damage really was cosmetic. Insurance was the same and never affected my NCB (Saga as stated) I would now sell it for about a grand and still feel happy as the car would stand me in zero. Buts its still worth the real money less the little dings. so go for it SUBJECT to a proper scrutiny of the car and HPI. Dont trust anyone least of all car dealers selling brand new motors.

Evening all!
I'm concerned about rust, currently the ladder frame on my disco 2 is in very good nick with minimal corrosion, and i'd like to keep it that way long enough to save up for a Dinitrol treatment. This car will be kept minimum 20 years. ... Read more
Pressure washers are a menace. I have had hgv vehicles damaged 4 times by the annual pre mot pressure wash. Damaged wheel bearing, steering joint seals blown, brake caliper seals blown, grease blown out of control linkages. They will also damage paintwork and underseal. I use low pressures jets. The lawn sprinkler under the car idea is great, I will try that myself.
I don't know if this is good forum behaviour here or not but I'm looking for recommendations for a new everyday vehicle with load space. Budget is tight at £5-10k. The requirements, other than reliable, is the ability to carry a lot of kit inside including bikes. We're talking two adult bikes and one child's bike plus camping gear. One.bike might be longer than normal. The other wish list item is that the vehicle is realistically cheap to run as possible for the size/capacity.
It will be the only family car.... Read more
Would just a normal van be suitable?
If you do a suitable mileage for a diesel ,transits and similar have 3 seats up front and loads of space in the back and are not too bad to drive. There should be plenty at the upper end of your budget that are in good nick. Smaller vans like the Doblo or Hyundai Iload might also be suitable.
Good morning folks, today i have a question to ask and seeking advice. I think my egr valve is sticking on my fiesta 1.4 tdci. So im looking to find out what is the consiquence of blocking off the egr or deleting it from the system. Ive heard of vw owners deleting it and the dpf when remapping the car for power increase, im not looking for power im just looking for an easy and inexpensive fix. If anyone else has had the problem of egr sticking could you please share your experience.
Thank you for any advice. Read more
You mention about deleting the EGR/DPF. Do note that with the new, stricter MOT test, if a car that was originally equipped with a DPF gives off any 'visible smoke' at the time of test, then it is an automatic fail. Same with if the DPF canister has been tampered with - unless there is documentary evidence (in the form of a receipt from the garage that did the work) that the work was carried out so that the DPF could be cleaned, then it's a fail.
Cutting corners and skimping on maintenance, or attempting to 'con' your way out of the emissions requirements, is going to start to become a mug's game.

Colant pump too as they can cause belt failure.
I recently bought an ex British gas VW caddy which has a roof rack. For a couple of reasons, i have been thinking about removing it.
I am not getting as good economy as i expected, OK i have only done this once so far, but i worked it out at 42.6 MPG. I realise, given my usage, this is probably not too bad, but given my connect (known as being less efficient than most small vans) averaged 39-40MPG , i was a little dissapointed not to be getting more and wondered just how much difference a roof rack might make?. By far the biggest majority of my main road driving is on single carriageway A and B roads, where i tend to drive between 50MPH (which is what i am legally supposed to be doing) and 60MPH, but usually closer to 50 these days as the caddy seems happier there (it is a 2.0 sdi, so 70BHP and fairly low gearing). I cover around 10k miles per year and at a guess i'd say about 80% of that would be driving to and from where i am working, the rest being short stop start runs from house to house in whatever town or village i happen to be working in.... BBD, I don't know what floorpan the Caddy is based on but VAG group are notorious for rain water leaks through the door cards. I've seen it on Polos, Fabias, Roomsters, Golfs, Octavias ( mine). So worth checking the base of the doors for wetness, the issue is with the seal/gasket. Worth checking before you go to town on the roof rack mountings.
From the B pillar forward the caddy is identical to the touran, so i'm guessing it would be, at least in part, the same as the golf....

yes sorry I did do that!
Still on the search for the wifes next motor and last week when the Superb was being serviced we got a Fabia 1.0 tsI 95 PS hatch for the day. I had asked if they could if possibly make it the version we were considering i.e. an estate 110 PS with 15" wheels (not the 16" 45 profile ones) but 2 days later I suspected it would go all wrong when I got a call asking when I wanted the Karoq test drive I had requested. When I picked up the Fabia as expected the chap I spoke to had not told anyone what I had said and the car provided matched none of my requests i.e 95 PS not 110 PS, hatch not estate and it had Carlos Fandango tyres.
Went out onto the peak driving on dual carraigeways, A roads and hilly B roads and it was magic. Plenty of grunt from the engine even in 95 PS form (the 110 PS has 15 more PS but 30 more torques as well) and even on the 45 profile tyres the ride was excellent, better than the Note on 65 profile tyres, quite a shocker that one. We wanted the estate to try the MIL's wheel chair for size but it fitted with no issues in the hatch which has a very good square boot. Rear seat space is a bit less than the Note but better than some cars in the size class above and is ample for us. Having looked at some old brochures I found when moving house last year the Fabia Hatch is actually a tad bigger than a Mk2 Golf and just a tad smaller than a Mk3 Golf and we managed with those from 1986 to 2002.... never havig driven a 1.2 engined car I can't compare, however am happy with the way the 1.0 engine drives.
We drove a 1.2 TSi 90 3 years ago in a Polo. We expected great things since we owned the 1.4 TSi in the Leon at the timebut it was dreadful. The salesman went away and checked to make sure it was a 90 PS variant (it was) but having tried it twice we walked away. To sum up it had no low down power in town and no overtaking power on A roads. We were stunned as to why it was getting great reviews....
My daughter has recently acquired a 2007 Suzuki SX4 1.6 petrol with 140,000 miles. The eml light has come on and plugging in an OBD reader has returned a P0420 error "catalyst system efficiency below threshold bank 1". Monitoring the O2 sensors output in TorquePro shows a waveform for sensor 1 and a 'flat line' response for sensor 2. Given that the car passed an MOT very recently and presumably passed the emissions test is it resonable to assume that the 02 sensor has failed.
As its within the 30 day warranty, the dealer is offering to replace the O2 sensor but my concern is whether the Catalytic Convertor may be faulty.... Read more
I would use your scantool to do some live data checks. Pay particular attention to the fuel trim figures. Do some Google research on Short Term and Long Term Fuel Trim.
Nankang noblesport NS-20 are passable summer tyres and will cost under £50 a rim in that size, but upping the budget slightly to £60 a rim will secure the Kumho Ecsta HS51 - a tyre that genuinely performs at premium tyre levels, no compromises, no excuses - a decent tyre at a keen price.
