Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can advise how long this clutch will last.
My coupe at the moment, while the engine is cold, is slipping if I accelerate hard from 3rd gear, once the car warms up however drives perfectly. Read more
Can I drop 1275 automatic engine and box into my 850 automatic has a straight swap or do I need to change anything else. They are both a series mini engines Read more
If the sub frame mountings are the same for both vehciles, could you swap the engine and sub frame assembly as one from the 1275 to the shell of the 850.
I would also concur with the previous post regarding the originality of the 850 auto as they are now extremely rare. ...
When servicing and Mot'ing his Mazda 3 in September the main dealer reported a crack in the clutch cylinder. They tooped up the reservoir and said it would be OK for s few months. There were no Mot advisories.
Last night the dash brake light came on and the reservoir needed topped up. The fault cleared. The thing is the Mazda only has one reservoir shared by brake and clutch systems. Probably a common arrangement but not one I had ever considered
I assume a leak in the clutch cylinder can therefore result in brake system failure? If so surely it should have been an advisory or advisedunder the service as an urgent issue. Or is there still a safe degree of separation?
Needless to say it will now get urgent indie attention. Read more
Maybe Mazda need to take notice of customers but saying that I will not by a BMW again which I have now because as long as they have idiots diagnosing issues and computer says no and they have no idea what's wrong........ give me a proper mechanic not a technician who uses a computer
If you have problems with 'improper mechanics', that is not necessarily a reason to write off Mazdas or BMW's. After doing that a few times you may have nowhere else to go. Find another place which has proper mechanics - they may even charge less.
Went to a main dealer today to look at a low mileage demo, 2161 miles, 11 months old...and 2nd keys and documentation/service records locked away...
Is it because of people nicking the service books and handbooks. Read more
My local car supermarket removes the tyre inflation kits as well as all the service books and manuals. When cars had cigarette lighters they took those out as well.
I’ve recently had a new ignition barrel installed due to a snapped key in old barrel. All works well apart from nuisance message appearing despite key not being in barrel. Does anyone know if a single fuse can be removed to disable this message and if so which fuse? Thanks, neil Read more
Yeah, that’s what they did. Just have to live with it then I suppose!
I was staying with my Dad and took my car for an MOT near where he lives. It was abandoned due to the car overheating. I had a long journey to get home, but they said it would be fine as air would be blowing through as I drove. Half an hour into my journey the car overheated again and the Green flag mechanic said it was a problem with the thermostat and took it out, but the problem remained, so my car was taken home for me. My local mobile mechanic (£30) that looked at it said it just needed more coolant. It then seemed okay for a while. When it happened again, I called the same guy out (£30) who did a check with his computer thingy and said it was misfiring and he said it was probably the spark plugs and getting them changed should do the trick. He did a pressure test on the head gasket and said that was fine. So, following his advice I took it to a garage who diagnosed a problem with 2 coils so replaced them and the spark plugs and then did a full service and MOT (total £500ish) They checked the head gasket and said it was fine. A couple of weeks later I broke down again, the RAC said it was probably another coil and tested the head gasket and said it was ok. Took me to a garage who replaced the remaining 2 coils and a faulty clip on a hose that had been put on wrong and that was causing a leak. (£280). Then I had a call to say it was the head gasket which would cost another £1200! I told them it had been tested before but he just shrugged his shoulders and said they couldn’t tell until they had replaced the coils and got it running. The car is only worth about £2k so I will probably scrap it, but before I do, I just want to check that this all sounds reasonable, and they are not ripping me off for the £280 they say I still owe them. What do you think? Read more
It’s all a bit strange this one. Did you go to them explaining that it was overheating? Why did they replace the coil packs? Were there any other symptoms such as rough running, only running on three cylinders? I’m no mechanic but the coil packs have no relevance if it was just overheating but if the HG was blown it could run rough leading them to the wrong conclusion I suppose but you’d expect a half competent mechanic to notice.
It sounds daft that they would spend your money on servicing it and replacing coils if it has suffered a possible HGF. It’s also highly unusual on this engine - I’m assuming it’s petrol. But much depends on communication between you and the garage.
I certainly wouldn’t spend another penny on it without someone else taking a look. Out of curiosity what age and model of Accord are we talking about and what mileage has it done?

There is also no way that a hire car would have a towbar fitted. Your best bet would be to hire a van from any of the french supermarkets, they all offer vehicle hire at 50% lower rates than the usual suspects, LeClerc, Intermarche and SuperU are the big three. Some transit sized vans have towbars
There's every way - it really isn't difficult to find them - even in the UK they need to be hired by those towing and involved in a non-fault accident - often something big like a Discovery.
As there have been various Guinness-record-type threads recently, I started wondering just how long OEM exhausts last on diesel cars. My present Peugeot and its predecessor both went 10 years on theirs, and my earlier diesel cars never needed work on them. Anyone claim a record? Read more
In my experience petrol engine car exhausts used to last around30 - 40k as petrol engines run hotter than diesels, therefore burn from the inside out. The manifolds used to go first.
I had a Peugeot 309 1.3 petrol in the late 90's (remember them?) it went though a system every year. Having said that almost once a fortnight it was travelling from North Northumberland to Lincolnshire at the weekends, wearing grooves on the motorways!...

Since the photos they use are grabbed off the web, I would have strong doubts about their legitimacy.
It can last as long as you want it to within reason, the clutch wears when its slipping so don't let it slip and it will considerably increase the life of it.
It could be that you have oil on the clutch plate which burns off when the car has been used for a while, have a look under the gearbox/bell housing for any signs of oil.
