We all welcome safety improvements. I notice an increasing number of cars with collision avoidance automatic braking of the car if a crash is likely.
The theory seems excellent. But what happens after a few years to its reliability ? How do garages check it's state ? Are some makers better than others ? Any data on accidents caused by malfunction ? Is it just one more thing which needs expensive maintenance ? Interestred in all views. Read more
Traffic furniture has gone on apiece; direction signs are now equipped with ‘reflecting’ signs whereas they were once equipped with illuminated pillars. When I write ‘reflecting’, the signs in the centre of town are bright and clean, and reflect. The ones on the A6 on pedestrian refuges are covered with traffic dirt and don’t reflect. Those near Lyme Park are so dirty that they are best seen in silhouette as they get in the way of the beams of the headlights of oncoming vehicles. It would be simple to wash them with a jet of water every so often. Perhaps the Highway Authority will think why they have to replace the signs so often as they are run over by vehicles the drivers of which don’t have the benefit of the headlights of oncoming vehicles. Thank you BT. I've reported it as you said and now await results - if any. I'm not holding my breath !

Thanks for posting Coversure, we'll now know who to avoid!
Despite the marketing twaddle, this just says to me that Renault have no confidence in their cars to remain trouble free past three years.
No doubt Renault have introduced the EasyLife pack as a temporary measure to soften the blow, then will remove it completely when people get used to the reduced three year warranty (a bit like what employers do these days when reducing employee perks).
I noticed Mazda isn't on your list above either, but from my own experience, their warranty isn't worth anything so doesn't matter how short it is. Read more
Mirrors my experience with Kia - always helpful, with warranty claims addressed without any arguement.

Laughed out loud when i read this story earlier:
On the other hand,
given how unsafe that once fine country is as it morphs steadily into the new Zimbabwe, handy wheeze to get rid of superflous body...dump the corpse close to a hungry pride of lions together with the 'evidence', one hunting rifle.
Mine has winter tyres but compared to a similar class of car that I used in snow a few years ago I don't like its braking. This is due to ABS, which prevents me locking up the wheels and letting the tyres collect snow to brake it - when that technique is appropriate. Is it possible to switch it off? If it is possible, I have in mind a simple switch/relay setup that will automatically switch ABS back on next time the car is started. I occasionally drive on completely snow covered roads just for the fun of it, but with ABS it isn't as much fun because I have somewhat less control. Read more
You should be able to unplug the ABS fuse from the engine bay with no limp mode. But personally I wouldn't recommend it, not adding a switch. It could be very easy to forget to replace it on a return to normal roads. Insurers would take a very dim view of disabling ABS if you had an accident.
Peugeot often like to put the ABS control unit in vulnerable places - like in the passenger front wheel arch behind a plastic liner in a rubbish plastic bag that dissolves away after years....
Approached a garage to remove the pre cats on my 2001 MR2 and the garage refused saying it would effect the MoT. The post I have read on line says it does not but they tend to be older posts, is it stil the true or has this changed.
Anyone know how long it takes, is it a hard DIY job? Read more
I have removed my pre cats on my 36,000 mile 2001 MR2 by replacing the manifold in Aug 2020 with a s/steel model without pre cats fitted, although it does have the ports to allow the CO2 sensors to be refitted. It took about 6hrs to remove and refit excluding refit of heat shields. I had it MOT'd at Toyota on 8th Sept 2020 and it passed without any advisories! So a definitive answer to the remove & MOT question. Best regards.

I bought a MR2 but can't open the lockers behind the seats, I presume they use the same key as the door/ignition key?
Anyone know how to unlock them, is there a catch or something I am can't see Read more
Without knowing what kind of bus you were on its hard to say. But, I had plenty of experience with buses that were virtually impossible to stop smoothly. Sometimes this would be due to very grabby brakes, sometimes it would be transmission jerking badly on its way down the gears, sometimes a combination of both. Also, and i don't know what company you were travelling with, and what their particular setup was, but with stagecoach it wasn't unusual to have buses from other depots on loan, buses which would not be familiar to the driver.
Having said that, thert are also lots of drivers who don't care how they drive and would make no effort to drive smoothly. Bear in mind that most bus drivers don't get paid, or treated well by their employers, so staff turnover is high, which in turn means a higher than average chance of an inexperienced driver who has only just finished training!. Yup, I hear complaints like this all the time. Usually accusing the driver in front of me of leaving early but it’s all monitored via GPS so it’s easy to check up and 95% of the time the driver is not at fault. Folks just like having someone else to blame for their own mistakes.
Amazes me also the number of people who don’t read the destination screen on the front of the bus. Every trip I’ll be stopped several times by someone wanting a different bus. The fuel and time that must be wasted nationally by this won’t be insignificant. Drivers are prone to being a bit grouchy about this one, especially if they’re running late.
Another is punters who want to catch another service which leaves at exactly the same time as the one they’re on arrives. They rant as they see the other bus leave as you draw in but you’re not allowed to run early and the other driver has to leave on his time. If you want that bus get the earlier one to get in on time! Same faces including one of my ex’s up at the stance window complaining almost daily to be told the same thing. Never learn.
