I would like to monitor my battery with some sort of in-car gadget so that I don't end up with a dead battery. It would need to be portable so that I could also use it in my wife's Yaris.

Any ideas or experience would be greatly appreciated. Read more

Condition and history are far more important than 40,000 miles.

Agree...I've bought many cars over the years...and never yet bought one simply because it had lower miles.

History/Conditon are paramount and tell much you much more about a vehicle.

I for one do not consider touch screens in vehicles to be safe to use, you cannot operate them without taking your eyes off the road ahead and obviously your attention is diverted for several seconds. Many cars have sat nav touch screens which cannot be operated whilst moving for just this reason, however, I have a sat nav like this but I still can and have to operate the radio by touch screen and of course newer cars like Tesla everything appears to be operated from the touch screen alone.

I wonder why In general aircraft tend to use buttons and switches to control systems even though they use huge display screens fo information, with a manual switch you feel and see the setting and in many case these can be operated by feel without averting vision from the view ahead, I also understand that some people with callussed fingers due to work can have problems activating touch screens? Manufacturers introduce features based on market demand and they sometimes do take risks.

Different people have different needs. Some people hate Auto Emergency Brake but I'd not buy a car without it now (when I change next time). My current car has some touch operated functions (sat nav, radio etc.) but usually it has buttons to for most of those. ...

Daft idea. These vehicles were designed as agricultural tools, to be left outside in all weathers and to tow trailers from the farm to market.

Yet after reading the good/bad section im put off as theres problems with DSG gearbox. has anyone got any other suggestions with good true mpg above 45 and around the 5/6k budget or even an opinion on the 1.2 tsi vw group cars Thanks Read more

My wife had a new Ibiza 1.2 tfsi in early 2012. It drove really well and was economical and all went well until shortly before the warranty expired when the turbo failed. I believe the failure was due to mainly short journeys - the turbo never got adequately lubricated. The car had only covered 9000 miles.

We both have DSG Audi’s now. The gearbox is jerky, but you learn to live with it, as you do with the delay when you need to pull away quickly. I thought long and hard about going auto on grounds of reliability, but I figured that while it’s under warranty it’s not my problem and we’ll take a view when the warranty expires. I definitely wouldn’t have DSG in a used car 5 years old.

I have recently got myself a ford fiesta zetec s 58 plate and have been driving it for 3 months or so and due to miles i travel for work i was wondering on how long my car will last as it has recently hit 100,000 miles. What sort of stuff will need changing/repairing (common faults) and how mch will it cost. I dont know much about cars but i just want to know what might come meaning the high mileage and what the expense of keeping running might be. Read more

On a warm spring day it's worth taking the wheels off to clean and grease the brake pipes. (superficially corroded pipes are a favourite MoT failure). Also, wirebrush the rusty suspension bits and paint these with oil - old engine oil will do. And the springs - although they probably won't appear rusty they can sometimes develop tiny cracks in which rust can penetrate. When it gets halfway across, the spring will break.
