As the title suggests, after the complete disaster of her ford fiesta 1.4 tdci which we bought at 8 year old 70k miles, owned for 2 years, poured money into it and then had to sell for parts on eBay.

This time can't afford to have an unreliable car ( although there's never any guarantees) budget will be around £1.5 - 2.5k so will have to be an older car so looking for something that will stand the test of time. ... Read more

Hi,
My little princess is bit asthmatic today :(

I took the idle contrl valve out and took it to bits...
and since it looked a bit worn on the contacts,
ibb.co/g1DYK6
I decided to get my hand in my pocket ! and get another
(ebay £20, but I got a new one from a motor factors £35 as I wanted it asap)

I put some new spark plugs in too (£7) (I spoil that car :) )

No difference !

This is what it sounds like on tiockover
and towards the end I pull the icv connector off, and not a huge amount of difference...

I have no idea if I should notice it when running
(altho' thinking about oit, it probably doesn't do the ecu any good)

ps pleae ignore the tappet noise, it's always been like that ...
it the hard of breathing bit is the new problem

When the car is running, it still has its amazing performance ..
but, in neutral if I blip the accelaerator (to 3500rpm at a a guess)
and then let it idle, it will stall after 4 seconds.

Any ideas please?

new spark plug leads?
ps the throrrle body butterfly looks clean , but there were a light spray og oilish on the walls, which Ihave cleaned offf...

Cheers
Liam
pps this started 2 days after installing the amazing ! remopte control from ebay
dunno if it could feed back a pulse thru the cig ligther and harm the ecu ... Read more

I think they are essential for cars over three years old. It's called the MoT test. No point in wasting extra money unless it's very old, in which case insist it's put on a ramp so you can get underneath and have a good look yourself for damage and corrosion.

Is this just a library photo of an unrelated crash? It clearly isn't a UK road - and it certainly isn't February - unless taken in the southern hemisphere. Is this actually a true story or just a piece of Telegraph entertaiment?

Some years ago probably about 2002, I was asked to give evidence to a planning enquiry regarding an application our organisation had made. Simple application for a car park extension but made complicated by the fact that the district boundary ran along the car parks limits thus 2 local authorities became involved. All parties were allowed a few minutes to speak and then ask questions of the other parties. I said my bit and then the leader of the protest said hers producing photos showing the area being all muddy and torn up by car tyres saying she did not want this next door again. I looked at the photo's and the cars shown were A35's, Hindustani type Morris Oxfords, Mk 1 Ford Consul types etc., clearly not a recent photo. Add to that a building on our site constructed in the 1960's was not there and the area we wanted to use as the car park was currently a disused and overgrown tennis court so no muddy tyre tracks possible....

My mum (aged 73) has been driving a 2.0 litre Ford Focus for the past 10 years. It keeps breaking down and costing her lots of money to fix.

I’m going to buy her a replacement and have a budget of £6k. She’s adamant she doesn’t want a ‘granny car’, such as a VW Up, so I’m considering a supermini - e.g. Ford Fiesta or Skoda Fabia. A used car with relatively low mileage.

Ideally it would be economical to run, to fix and to tax. She does a fair amount of motorway driving as well as around town. It has to be an automatic, and I’m slightly nervous about her having anything more punchy than a 1.4l engine. She’s not as confident behind the wheel as she used to be.

I don’t know much about cars and was hoping someone could give me some good advice on what to go for?

Thanks in advance Read more

Thank you very much indeed. The posts were exactly what I need : clear, comprehensive and practically related. Thanks again

Any help appreciated, I have scoured Google with no good results. I'm at my wits end with trying to fit a replacement rear passenger door glass. I have the door panel off, lower window trims and I can drop the glass into the door. I just cannot work out how to get it into both runners. I have tried tilting within the door but cannot get enough rotation. I obviously cannot take off the runner that also holds the rear quarter window. There doesn't appear to be a way to loosen the front runner. I have taken off the internal trim which didn't reveal any 'magic' screws to loosen the fwd runner. I tried to prise off the fwd column outer trim but this appears to be quite fixed in place and didn't want to force too hard.

Try Googling BMW tis. Getting to the right place is a bit long winded but most information can be found with a little persistence.

Found a car I like listed on Autotrader - I won't list the seller as it could be unfair if it comes up on Google.

This is a car for £6k which is a pretty decent price for what I want but not alarm bell good.

I have spoken with the dealer who has let me have some wiggle room on the price if I pay cash and do not go through the books. Therefore no warrenty but a written assurance the car is good.

Secondly, the garage is not a premised garage but appointment only on an industrial estate.

Thirdly, after a little digging, it seems the business was incorporated only 12 months ago, and already they have 30+ autotrader reviews, all 5 star, and all unverified. Yet they have no facebook or google reviews (which I tend to find contain more negative reviews).

I am completely inexperienced buying cars so just reaching out for some thoughts?
