Now we're back in the real world. Civic, Focus, Mazda 2 or 3 etc. There's loads to pick from if you stick to the more "run of the mill" stuff. A lack of an NCB is, admittedly, a bit of a financial drawback especially if you went for the prestige or performance stuff...which you really should avoid for the time being and which you seem to have settled on - excellent.

But we all started off in the same boat and most have built up a few years which will be a real help for you in a couple of years time and in the meantime your levels of experience will increase....

I ordered an EOF0012 oil filter for my car, on the box it says EOF004 but someone has handwritten OF0012 on the box but it says EOF004 on the oil filter.

I assume it is a bad idea to install this? Read more

When I serviced the wife's one a little while back I go t the opposite, small one was fitted and was sent the larger one in the service kit. When I read up on it technical concesus was the larger one was lightly better option for the year but don't think it matters that much from what I read.

I agree with the previous comments about people riding the clutch at junctions or in jig-jog traffic. Sometimes it can't be helped (as I've found) in slow moving traffic, as stopping, applying the handbrake, waiting for the vehicle in front to (crawling below walking pace) move enough ahead to be able to full engage first gear will often allow enough of a gap to encourage some idiot in another lane to jump into the gap, and as a consequence, also encourage (if it happens more than once) drivers behind to get annoyed or worse.

This is the reason I was considering a TC auto when I was looking (now aborted) to replace my current manual car - first gear in my Mazda3 1.6p mk1 is often very fierce (even when the car is fully warmed up) and control below 5mph without slipping the clutch is often tricky (the dealership cannot see any problems) as it wants to race away. Other gears are fine....

You only need to walk across a carpark to see visibly under inflated tyres. It is also regular to see them in traffic, rather more worrying as the fact the vehicle has been driven means the tyres are warmed and the pressure increased!

When my car died after filling up, water was found to be contaminating the petrol. I reported this to Trading Standards who visited the filling station and confirmed water contamination. Filling station no longer had a leg to stand on after initially denying any problem. Read more

Cutting edge technology...

It should be easy, just be careful, to check if the lower edge of the door is sharp, it sounds like the outer door skin is not properly fitted.

As it an alternative, look for a car with plastic mouldings over the lower part of the doors.

Does the fuel pump run when the engine is cranking? This model may have an inertia switch, especially if the fuel pump relay is not tachometric. It'll be most likely located behind the centre console or near the spare wheel in the boot. Make sure it hasn't tripped.

"Speeding fines are simply a tax on stupidity."

I don't think anyone can really argue with that, as long as the definition of stupidity includes the certainty of not being found out .... :-)

Funny you should mention the doors freezing. I had a Volvo V50 for 6 years and it was the worst car I have had for doors freezing up.

I did like it though.

New car sales have dropped with diesel models sold apparently down significantly. I don't buy new but wonder how down the line prices of used cars will be affected and for new car buyers if they will see price changes. Read more

Perhaps a more accurate thread title would be "Drop in car registrations" - given that a year or so ago it was reported that up to 20% of registrations were to dealers' stock, so they could earn their volume bonuses. Given the general tightening of credit, it is likely that this practice has become too costly. Perhaps there'll be a reduction in the number of "nearly new" cars for sale
