I SORNed the car, via the DVLA.gov site, on 31st December ( a Sunday). Tax was up to the end of April so I expected 4 months refund. I only got 3. I notice the wording on the letter with the cheque is "...from the date we received notification..."

Are refunds calculated by humanoids, and therefore they are claiming they received notification whenever they went back to work after New Year? I would have thought it would all be automated and my SORN would be acknowledged by "the system" on December 31st.... Read more

For the sake of closure, here's the outcome - my error. I could have sworn it was taxed until the end of April, not the end of March.

Anyway, the lesson here is that I did succeed in declaring SORN on December 31st, which was a Sunday, and not infringing January as I suspected I had. The three months refund was therefore correct, as pointed out to me by the DVLA, in a polite and patient tone which suggested to me that they are well practised in dealing with idiot queries like mine all the time........

17,000 miles a year implies lots of motorway and dual carriageway driving. Why specify petrol? Diesel will work just as well if not better and in the current climate, you may pick up a cheap one because people have been scared into avoiding them.

Sounds like a job for a typical Focus/Golf size car with a 2.0 turbodiesel. ...

On a 6 year old car with 120,000 miles on the clock it'll be due whenever you decide to do it.

Had brakes fail on a fire engine once. Coming down a steep hill full tilt, rapidly approaching a T junction...applied firm pressure to the brake pedal and nowt. Turned to the officer in charge and just said "no brakes". Didn't really have time to try changing down through gears (automatic) or pulling on the handbrake, but shot out into the main road (which was generally busy but on this occasion turned out to be totally empty of traffic).

Same thing happened to several other drivers in the same machine, all of whom avoided serious consequences through luck or better reactions than me. ...

We think that we may, just MAY have found the car we want. I won't go into details until and unless we actually buy it, not least because folks must be mighty bored with me droning on about my search.

However, its at a main dealer, and a clue to their identity might be that they have a service called Move Me Closer, where if you find a car at any dealership across their group, they will move it to the branch closest to you for a refundable fee. And we've arranged that. ... Read more
