As part of a “Climate Plan” the French government has launched a scrappage scheme for older vehicles to encourage motorists to trade up to newer cleaner replacements.

Your old car or van must have been registered before 1997 for petrol vehicles, and before 2001 for diesel vehicles … so probably not taking too many BR readers' cars off the road

The vehicle you trade in must be registered in France, and have been owned by you for at least one year. The amount you might be paid varies depending on the household’s financial situation, with up to €1,000 available for taxed households and €2,000 for those that do not pay tax … not an irresistible incentive I imagine.

The money received through the scheme must then be used to buy or rent a new or recently-second-hand electric vehicle, or one using petrol or diesel, which emits less than 130g CO²/km, classified as Crit’air 1 or 2... Read more

I find sales staff at smaller dealerships such as Suburu or Kia to be a lot more clued up than sales staff at large dealerships such as Vauxhall or VW

The main difference is flexibility on price, inevitably the larger dealers are able to drop the price with ease unlike the smaller dealers.

Price is still the most important for me, especially on new and pre reg vehicles

Kia Sorento 2012 diesel, message flickering 'check water separator', which is the fuel filter I believe. Not a DIY job (for me), and car next service is April (still under warranty).

Do I wait for warning light to stay on, leave it until service, assume its a sensor fault (flickering presently) or get filter drained by dealer straightaway?... Read more

Hi can anyone help, I have a Citroën xsara Picasso 1.8 executive on a 54 plate. The eml light came on and displayed engine fault on the dash. The next day I got to the end of the road and it cut out and would not restart.

More likely to be a wire shorted or rubbed out somewhere in the engine bay.Selecting reverse will make the engine move and flex the wiring harness.

Having used the liber-t tag in France and realising the time and effort it saves at the peage I am now tempted to get a tag for Spain and Portugal. Has anyone used this tag yet? If so any comments from personal experience would be welcomed. I am getting the ferry to Bilbao quite soon.

Hi all,

I’ve had this car just over a week and it’s been perfect.

Today I nipped out literally round the corner to pick the Mrs up and a huge cloud of thick white greyish smoke came right out of the exhaust. I got out and there was a burning smell, I think it was oily but could have been plastic. Like a burning plastic bag.

Drove back and started again when I reduced speed.

I’m waiting for the AA to come and called the dealer I bought it from, who had a “meh” sort of attitude, still waiting for his call back! ( it’s been a long 10 minutes!!)

I’ve checked the engine, coolant is still there, checked the oil, no residue around the cap but smells a little.

No warning lights at all and engine sounds fine, no loss of power or any detected leakage underneath.

I’ve had numerous head gasket and cylinder head failures on other cars and this is my uneducated guess it will be a head gasket failure.

No smoke coming from the engine and the engine doesn’t appear to have any smells.

I’m completely expecting the worse but could it possibly be something other than the head gasket?

Any advice will be much appreciated. Thank You Read more
