This is the latest version of my experimental device for monitoring acceleration and braking forces. Driver aims for zero force to obtain maximum saving. You can see a video showing how it works in town. Just enter 'Laurence ivan laud' into the Youtube search bar. I would be very grateful for any comments or observations Read more

Notwithstanding the merits or the possible illegality of a head up display in the drivers forward field of vision, this device has a fundamental problem and as such is going to be ignored by car manufacturers.

Driving a car for maximum fuel economy is actually a complex formula, it is NOT simply a case of sticking to a constant speed, which is served well by cruise control. For instance, for best economy, accelerating to a given speed requires knowledge of the fuel efficiency / demand / torque / engine speed characteristics of the engine. Simply accelerating slowly is NOT an efficient use of fuel. Likewise decelerating for maximum economy requires complex read ahead of the road and an appropriate strategy to be adopted. World class hyper milers know all this and this simple device does little to aid anyone and as pointed out is actually a driver distraction device, bear in mind the state of our litigation crazy world, should your device be implied in an accident......

My brother-in-law has just had new brake discs fitted to his 2008 Ford Focus. The old ones had large deep pits in them. Was this corrosion or a manufacturing fault? Thanks

I have seen extensive corrosion on "stainless" motorcycle discs using sintered metal pads, put away wet after riding on salt-laden roads. The cause is dissimilar metals with an electrolyte, the salt solution, I don't know if car pads contain some metal, possible cause of big holes in cast iron discs?

The reverse lights on my 2009 XC60 are rubbish, I have to drive down single country lanes with NO street lighting and at this time of the year its a nightmare meeting another car and having to reverse. I'm told that legally the max light is 11watts.

Anyone got this problem or ideas as to make driving this Volvo easier. Read more

Not too sure how many reverse lights can be fitted, but each can be a maximum of 21 watt.

I think diesel is going to get taxed a lot in the future due to its excessive particulates. Have driven the diesel Macan which is v g. Did not like to see the extra pipe under the fuel filter cap which has to be charged up every 12K miles and costing £125 each time though. Anyway think petrol S is the best way to go. Do you think the petrol turbo costing another 9K is cost effective considering the petrol consumption is not really that different between either version and is in the same tax bracket re CO2 and considering future depreciation which would be best do you think? Petrol head friends tell me the turbo. Read more

An nice dilemma for the new Year! The diesel unit is the VW/Audi one, lots of issues with it on the forums and you'll be buying a Euro 6 version with additional exhaust after-treatment technology on it -- very complex and a lot to go wrong. I would be going for a petrol version, with a Porsche motor, no idea which though, depends on your ultimate budget and how much performance you need. I predict that the S petrol version will prove the most cost effective to buy and suffer the relative least depreciation somehow. At the end of the day one buys a Porsche for performance and to marvel at the engineering, to me that means petrol powered- just my thoughts! best of luck and let us know how it is after a month or two! The 911 is my dream car!
