Why is it car manufactures seem quite on this subject. Could it be they see the future in smaller powerful petrol engines and hybrids. Read more

The government is full of daft ideas and this is simply the latest in a very long list. Keeping the 70mph motorway limit is another piece of lunacy. Without the economy offered by diesel everything would go up in price as transport costs would increase, and, besides, diesel drivers already pay more at the pump than petrol users - on the continent it tends to be the other way round. Why penalise a more cost effective fuel? Until electric cars become truly viable, which won't happen for many years, diesel will remain the most economical way of fuelling a vehicle.

Lubricating drive belt when very dry and squeaking and making clicking or tapping noise when starting up.

Is is possible please to use WD 40 on drive belts or are you not allowed to do this please?... Read more

As has been said, WD40's intended purpose is as a Water Dispersant. Many people think it is a lubricant, but it is better as a penetrating oil. Because it is good at penetrating it will often stop squeaks or other noises from dry mating surfaces, but it tends to disappear quickly.

When I have such noises I try to introduce a drop or two of 'proper' oil to the source of the noise, then carry it further in with a squirt of WD.

Hi I'm hoping that someone may be able to advise me on which car, either a Saab9-3 1.9tid vector or the Volvo S60 2.0t se. They are both 03 reg, both have best part of a years MOT and have mileage of around 140 000. Priced at £1500. I am guessing the Saab probably has better fuel economy, being diesel. But have heard all sorts of problems regarding limp mode and fly wheel problems. The volvo appears to have the most reliable reviews? Both of these cars have good service history. I have no idea which is likely to be the best buy?! So if someone has first hand experience good and bad of these types of cars, I would be delighted. Many thanks!! Read more

I also meant to add, I asked Honest John and he has steered me away from the 1.9 diesel. So that combined with your advice, the Volvo it is!! Cheers guys.

The Outback is coming in April, I've had the email teaser but it's not for me.
Shame really as I like them but once our Forester XT has gone it's unlikely Subaru will have a car I want.
Unfortunately it looks as if a combination of emissions requirements in Europe and preference for other markets where they have critical mass means that we will have a very restricted model/spec availability.

Small range, few colours and very limited spec upgrades would seem to mean further declining sales, even the Forester and XV are down year on year which is poor for new models.

As the Outback and the Levorg (later 2015) come it will be interesting to see if they get a bounce but there is so much competition it is questionable.

If the Outback was coming with 3.6/2.0FADIT with the ability to spec it to and above the last 3.6r I would have ordered one. As it is I've gone for a nearly new RX450 so one customer gone.

My vectra has a noise coming from under the bonet that sounds like noisey taper, although I've got no idea what the noise really is. It doesn't get any better when warm. Cars done 50k with full service history. The dealer did oil and filter change when I bought it 6 months so the oil is new and only 3k covered since.

Hi guys I need some advice. I rear ended a car yesterday at speed. We were traveling on a straight road towards a left hand turn off and the two cars in front slowed down using engine breaking, no break lights. They were in convoy and missed their turn. I preemted the engine break to a certain extent and managed to slow down before the collision but my breaking distance was reduced due to having no indication that the car in front was slowing down. Then the unbelievable happened. Both cars tried to turn left without indicating and braked sharply. I had no room to stop. I am not sure if the car I hit, hit the car in front but everything came to a grinding halt. I hit the car in front at around 30mph on a 60mph road, The impact was enough to completely write off both cars. The front car fled the scene and my family ended up in A&E for four hours for mainly minor injuries. The two cars in front were clearly driving without due care and attention. I would have had plenty of time to stop for the junction if they had braked correctly and indicated their intentions. I have witnesses in my favour. How do I stand?

Edit: My bad. They braked sharply not breaked. Read more

it does sound like this was a set up, did you have a on board camera in your vehicle? unfortunatly you will be at fault, but there are things you can do, the area you have mentioned is a hot spot, being not far from Birmingham.

Make your insurer aware that you feel it is a crash for cash scam, ask them to investigate...they will......

I rent cars about five or six times a year, usually in Israel but occasionally elsewhere. I thought I would do a blog on my impressions of each car, but who would read it; so instead I will do a thread and if you want to comment/ignore feel free.

I usually travel with the family which is SWMBO plus three children aged 16, 14 and 10. They are growing so we are getting to the point at which we need a car for five adults. When we had child No. 3 we had all the baby paraphernalia so it made sense to rent a seven seat car for the space and also because our eldest had some social skill/behaviour issues so separating him from the others was a good thing. Matters have improved and as we travel relatively light we usually rent a medium sized saloon (Mazda 3 sized) and usually we are given a Hyundai i35 (A booted version of the i30, but a bit more stylish). It is fine for the journey from the airport to our apartment and any long journeys we do without all the luggage. Good car apart from badly positioned air vents (cold hands), steering that is too light and it lacks the low end torque I am used to from a turbo diesel (almost all rental cars in Israel are petrol automatic).... Sounds good Alby. Just checked the VW website. I reckon I was driving a Polo Match with the 1.0 75bhp engine. Certainly not the 1.2TSi and possibly the 60bhp version. Both the 60 and the 75 have the same torque (70lb ft) at the same rev peak (3,000rpm)
