Hi. Wonder if if you can help please?

I've just bought a second-hand Vivaro. Tried to put the code in to unlock the radio (Battery had been disconnected by previous owner) but the central digital display (for clock/radio/outside temperature) is not working.... Read more

Could be the back light illumination failed ?Can you see any digits if you shine a light on the front of the display.

A few days ago, a warning message appeared "de pollution system faulty". As a precaution my local garage have done a code test, and apparently it is to do with the timing chain, which needs replacing.

If I continue to drive the car it could wreck the engine. I know the repair costs are not cheap.

How come the warning message did not say "Timing chain problem"' or similar? Is the depollution system faulty message meaning the timing chain is fault? Read more

The only clue you could get would be 'retarded timing' but that would be impossible for the reader to know - unless it has a 'slackness sensor' which I doubt.

Hi all,

At the weekend I bought a used car from a dealer, it is an ex-Motability car so the taxation class on the V5C is still 'Disabled'.

The dealer has the V5C and will be sending that off to DVLA, and I will then receive the new V5C with my details on it.

In the meantime I have the V5C/2 new keeper supplement, but when I put the reference number on that into www.taxdisc.service.gov.uk, it tells me that the taxation class is 'Disabled', and I should only proceed if I want to confirm that this is correct.

Obviously this is not correct, but I don't have the option to change it. I rung the DVLA just now to ask them what I should do, and the lady told me to fill out a V62 and take it to the Post Office. However, having looked at the V62, it says I should only use that if I haven't received my V5C in the post within 4 weeks after purchasing the car.

Any help/advice?! Thank you! Read more

Do as the lady says. I assume you are not married ;-)

Hi, My Citroen spluttered to a halt on the Mortoway last week, lost all power and ECU warning light. I limped the car along to nearby family member and called Green Flag. During that journey, the power seemed to recover but the ECU warning stayed on; Green Flag checked the codes which seemed to indicate a fuel leak, but then went on to check the car very very thoroughly. Concluded it was probably a bit of contamination in the fuel or even air. Since Mrs G had fllled up at tesco earlier that day, it seems plausible.

Now planning to fill up with Shell or BP, not supermarket grade, and driving 250 miles on Wednesday. Would one of the small bottles of diesel additives in the tank make sense at this stage? to clean out any further risks? Note... the car has driven fine all week since on the same Tesco fuel. Have had the car 3 years and run it so far on various different brands of "stock" diesel.

I have an idea that, just as with extended oil change intervals and sealed for life (pause for laughter) gearboxes, many makers have extended Diesel fuel filter replacements to too long intervals for use in the real world.

We had fueling issues affecting our MAN lorries, one after another brought up fuel supply problems on the dash (more specific version of the anonymous EML), a visit to the dealer and a new filter saw the problem rectified on each, those intervals have now been revised to more frequent, result no more problems...though the head mechanic did show me how to and how much to drain the fuel sediment bowl which he advised to do fairly regularly between services....

Having had some difficulty obtaining information regarding to real world MPG I've just com across this site. Questioning it's accuracy, I've been able to look up just about every car we've owned over the past 13 years and I have to say I'm mightly impressed how accurate these figures are.

If there's some bright spark in Government reading this, what about doing every motorist a favour and ditch the Official MPG figures produced by manufacturers and replace them with HonestJohn's Real MPG?... Read more

Anyway. I actually own a Fiesta 1.0 T 100ps. The car is 18 months old and has covered 18k. Tank to tank calculations show the car averages 54.7 mpg. One week the car travels 3 miles per day and on the alternative week I do 100 miles per day. The car has been faultless. You will not get a small petrolcar with that much engine flexibility and economy elsewhere. Avoid the 1.25 zetec as it could not pull the skin off a rice pudding and you will use more fuel reving the engine to attempt to get it to go anywhere! The ecoboost does not need to be driven hard to get performance out of it. Others commenting need to drive/own an ecoboost long term before criticising one.

I was referring to Renault's 900cc turbocharged triple not Ford's. In my experience Renault's has almost zero torque at any revs.

Hi,

I need some help with my corsa. It is '09 1.0 litre life.

For the last couple of months i have been having problems with power steering. At first, I would just get the power steering and ABS light come on during engine start up. All it took was to restart the engine and the faults would clear. (whilst the faults were there, i would have no physical power steering available).

Now pretty much every morning i have to leave the car running for 20-30 mins, and then restart the engine to clear the faults. Once the faults clear, power steering is fine.

It seems like the colder the weather, the longer i have to run the engine before the faults clear.

Is this a common fault of any sort? Vauxhall have reset the ECU, courtesy of £60, which is the same that my local garage did (who said i should go to vauxhall). The reset didnt do anything. They are saying they will need 1-2 days to look at it at maximum of £250 labour just for inspection.

I really don't know much about cars, let alone how to diagnose/fix them. I'm just curious if someone can give me advise, because they dealer is being vague and not giving me much info.

Hi. i've been told by vauxhall that my power steering control module is faulty and the whole unit needs replacing. The costs are way beyond what i can afford, so trying to get a second hand part. They gave me the part number 95514393, but this just brings up lots of german websites, one if which has a steering column. The spare parts companies are looking for more specific info.

I was asking these people about parts (http://www.acspowersteering.co.uk/) and she told me that the vauxhall number isnt the right one and im to look in the footwell above the pedals and that i wouldnt need to remove the panel. I found that number, but it seems like it is just for the steering column lower joint (13248190).

Any ideas what i should be looking for? I'm going to have the garage fit it, but i really need to get the part 2nd hand to save the cash. Appreciate the help.

I have the 6000CD radio in my Mondeo (the one with the centre power on/off button, if that helps?), and whilst I can get power, I cant get the radio, or play a cd, and there is no information on the display... Not asking for codes or giving an indication of fault.

Any ideas? Please? Read more

It might be worth pulling the radio out from the dashboard, pulling all the connectors out and then pushing them back in. See whether that makes any difference.

Other than that I think you will probably need a new radio because your existing one is faulty. It's not worth repairing them because you can obtain a second hand one from Ebay or a scrapyard for less than what a repair would cost....

Does anyone know if I can tax the car online first or do I have to wait until the owner surrenders the tax then do it?

When you collect the car the person you are buying from will give you the V5C keeping only the bit they have to send back notifying the DVLA of the fact they have sold it, this triggers the reffund of remaining VED automatically....

Hi all,

I have bought a passatt cc 08 plate (2.0 TDI DSG) in august this year. Everything was fine the car up until the moment where the gas temerature sensor blow. I have ad it changed and everyhing is fine gain except my conumption. In the city, the car eats around 10-12 L while on the motorway 7-8L. For a passatt cc it is a big ifference and it bithers me bacuse why should I pay more when I know its not right?

So I took the car to a garage, where the guy diagnised the "dpf illness". He said it is clogged and the it can cause damage further down the line it is not taken care of. He said the car looks fine but it is in an emergency state.

At the end he said that he will remove the filter, reset the comupter and make it eco friendly. However I have read many articles and forums about it and isn't it illegal to have it done, and the car won't pass the MOT test? When I have asked him about this he said its all propaganda.

When I have asked him about the warranty he said let me quote " Lifetime".
It all sound nice but I'm just afraid that it is just another scam .

Have any of you got any suggestions please? If yes I wouldn highly appricite it.

Many thanks in advance... Read more

Back to the OP. Diesel engines produce particulate matter which includes carbon (soot) and metal, as well as gasses. Not all of the PM can be broken down by the regeneration process, and so over time the DPF will become so blocked that a replacement is the only option. The more short journeys you do the quicker the DPF will become blocked. They can be professionally cleaned but this is a specialist job, and even then it will eventually need replacing. The regeneration process works by the ECM adding a post injection stage to inject fuel just before BDC, so that the fuel ignites and burns inside the exhaust. This increased temperature burns off some of the PM so it can then pass through the filter. This procedure will only be activated under certain driving conditions controlled by the ECM. The driver cannot make a regeneration happen, other than to be driving in a manner in which the ECM will commence the process.

If your motorway MPG is poor the problem could be that the ECM is continuously trying to regenerate the DPF. This could be because the DPF has become so blocked with PM that cannot be removed, and in this case a new one will be required, or the pressure differential sensor which measures the pressure difference either side of the DPF could be faulty. Check the pipes from the DPF to the pressure differential sensor to make sure they aren't split or blocked, which would lead the ECM to think that the DPF is blocked and needs a regeneration.

Its probably the HP diesel pump regulator, they cause most problems on these. You can get a new one on ebay for about £100 or a secondhand one for a lot less, they are not to difficult to fit.
