Purchased my C5 Nov 2013 £4,500 - 76,000 miles. Dec 2013 replaced Turbo £2,600 (main dealer). MOT in May 2014 £750 (local garage), Serviced Aug 2014 £350, Nov 2014 Engine ceased and car written off. The reason for the engine ceasing is likely, but unconfirmed, unless I pay a mechanic to inspect at my expense, due to a problem with the turbo. Prior to the turbo outlet pipe bursting off, travelling at 40 mph, the car started sounding like a tractor with a loud clicking from the turbo, intermitent smoke on acceleration from the exhaust and reduction in acceleration. 100,000 miles. The breakdown mechanic looked at the engine. He stated in his opinion the turbo did not look new. The car is now at the main dealer, I have an appointment to test drive a Citreon Berlingo and Renualt Kangoo on Monday.

THANK YOU To everyone who took the time to give me advice. I took into account all your opinions. The outcome was, the main dealer gave, a what I feel was an excellent deal, on a Kangoo Van which included warranty and servicing. I should now have trouble free motoring. The information I received was much appreciated. x

Thank you. I've browsed a few motoring forums on this topic, and it's often said that the Ford recommendations err on the generous side; but for the purposes of selling the car you've given me the answer I was hoping for. :0)

Currently with a Renault Modus diesel, but also with an older Mazda 2, the semi-automatic robotised-clutch gear selector, when placed in neutral at traffic lights, sometimes fails to engage drive (first gear) to set off. Always seems to happen, embarrasingly, at traffic lights. Admittedly, both models were over four years old, so some corrosion on the contacts could be responsible.

Is it difficult to access these beneath the gear lever? Can the relay switch assembly be changed? Is it located inside or outside the vehicle? And is it even helpful to select neutral at traffic lights because there is no transmission creep like conventional automatics? Thank you. Read more

It is not the 'last ever tax disc' as the last one ever issue would expire in 2015!

Talking of things that are over priced I've seen some things at incredibly high prices on Ebay in the past on buy it now.

While driving engine revs increase spontaniously and there is no response from accelerator. At the same time an 'engine failure' notice appears on the dashboard.

It is in the dealers for the third time snd had been there for a week and no fault has been found. Read more

Its a 2010 petrol 1.6 littre hatchback and has done only 26000 miles. On the second visit to the dealer their computer detected a fault with a brake switch. They changed it but the fault was still there and it has been back with the dealer since Monday, 11th November.

My 2012 ML250 has developed a fault where by it stalls occasionally when cold and idling at a junctions, usually before the ECO system has kicked in. It always re-starts first time. The problem has been happening for about 6 months but is very intermittent, nothing for a few days then 3 times in one journey until the car has wamed up.

The car has been in to the main dealer 4 times, they have tried various things but failed to find the problem. They have just rang to say there are iron-filings in the fuel, this is caused by the some part of the fuel system (pump?) breaking up and must have been due to a mis-fuel (i.e. I’ve put petrol in a diesel engine) and a lack of lubrication. They say this is the cause of the stalling and the Mercedes warranty is obviously therefore invalid.... Read more

It is possible that an early misfuelling incident could cause damage months later. What happens is as follows:

Modern diesel injection systems have a precision-made, ultra-high pressure pump on the engine which pressurises the injection system to around 30,000psi. This pump is lubricated by the diesel oil which passes through it. ...
