I was reading this story (from Superbike magazine, 1984) about a rapid journey from John O'Groats to Land's End - 884 miles in 11 hours 14 minutes on a Kawa GPz750 turbo, at a point-to-point average of nearly 79mph: www.tubbylardo.co.uk/2011%282a%29.html

I don't think that would be possible these days, given traffic volumes, speed cameras etc: in fact, averaging even 60mph point to point usually involves cruising above the legal limit most of the time.... Read more

Hi all, hoping to get some advice on a purchase i'm *hopefully* about to make.

It's time for a new car, and i've been looking for something economical, low(ish) on tax and insurance, reliable as well as having a bit of 'oomph' when i want, all for less than £5k... ... Read more

I would agree with previous posts that with your motoring schedule I would advise against a diesel. Diesels take a long time to warm up and are most efficient when they're warmed up. If you're looking for fun, diesels can be fun but petrols are more refined. So for short local journeys, a petrol might be more fun if you care about refinement.

Also if the diesels have a diesel particulate filter, those REQUIRE heat in the exhaust to burn off the diesel particles and avoid getting clogged up. With a lot of short journeys you run the risk of this never happening and hence needing to replace the DPF very quickly which can be a little pricey....

I'm fairly convinced now that our roadworks are planned by m****s, or by people who actively enjoy creating problems.

The disgraceful mess of roadworks around the Western Bypass in Newcastle has rendered the A1 a commuting no-go zone - so the genuises have now reduced the A690 to a single lane contraflow putting any commuters from Durham into the situation of picking which set of traffic jams they would like to sit in.... Hmm, they have now added 3 miles of contraflow on the northbound stretch approaching the chaos of the A1 Western Bypass.

Now I fully admit being a cynic but this contraflow seems only to be there to slow down the approaching traffic - it only moves the inside lane to the hard shoulder and the outside lane to the inside lane. This leaves about half of the outside lane 'coned off' and nothing at all on the opposite carriageway. There is no work is going on and there isn't actually any room for work to be done. The road studs/lane markings in place tend to suggest this is here for the long term as well....

My A1 TFSI was poor for average fuel economy, overpriced without any helpful Main Dealer discounts, extras were expensive and generally the A1 was no bigger than a mini, only saving grace was it was quite nice to drive, hope the revised versions are some what better, as I got rid of mine after 8 months from new after waiting 3 months for it to be delivered, into the country.. Hi, I have an 11 plate zafira and have a horrible noise while driving, not all the time but more often when cold or damp. It sounds like a belt slipping. I have had the belt replaced and other things checked, I have now been told that it could be the turbo 'winding down'. I have driven cars and vans with turbos on and have never heard anything like this, any clues? Could it be the turbo is defective? Or on its way out? The car is an ex mobility car with 20,000 on the clock so has not been hammered. I need to find out soon as I only had 6 months warranty on it and have already had the car 2 1/2 months. Help!!! Thanks in advance. Read more

Insist on a good quality belt - I'd suggest Continental or Gates.

Also make sure the pulleys are thoroughly cleaned with a good solvent cleaner (I've found brake cleaner to be good for this). Diesel grime, oil mists and rubber from the old belt all contribute to the new belt continuing to slip.

Hi guys,

Is there anybody out there that actually knows anything about the new Mini Cooper SD!?

I've been searching every search engine and YouTube etc but can't find anything about the Cooper SD...it's all Cooper S reviews only. I've recently purchased one and collect it this week, I test drove both the Cooper S and SD but fell in love with the SD, granted it doesn't sound anything like the S but I enjoy lazy torque power and with the motorway driving I do it seemed perfect for me.

I'm just amazed I can't find any video reviews about it! I've told the missus when we collect it this week I'm going to get her to be my Camera Woman and film me reviewing it, I will be totally honest and due to the lack of SD related coverage I'm guessing I could potentially become famous from this video!!

Any feedback and comments useful and related to the SD will be welcomed. According to Mini Official website the car has 190bhp and 390 torque, but the odd website says it's more like 168bhp and 340 torque!? Does anybody (including blooming Mini) know what this car is/does....

All the best guys,
Lee. Read more

Been looking to buy a used VW Up in recent weeks, and a used Golf.
Experience 1: of a VW dealer in SW London.
They had the Up I wanted at a good price. Had several phone conversations with the sales guy. Have bought a couple of cars at a distance from VW and BMW dealers in the past, have paid up front and arranged to collect the car. Turned up for this car, and.... the car was in a pretty poor state (given it was one owner, 12 plate, with c 15,000 on the clock). Unrepaired damage to a rear panel, minor scuffs front and back, damage to the dash. The sales guy tried to convince me that for the price, I should take it as is. I was also offered the Supaguard or something similar) treatment at the bargain price of £1,500 (I'm serious).
I pulled out of the sale.... Still waiting for the refund of my cash.
Experience 2: Arthur Prince, a VW dealer in Loughborough
Good conversation with the sales guy, answered all the questions on the condition of the car, agreed the deal, and turned up to collect. What a difference. Customer service..... Well presented dealership, friendly, helpful. No attempt to rip me off with any add-ons that I didn't want It's a family firm, apparently. The current owner/manager made a point of coming over to thank me for buying a car from them, presented a bottle of wine, and an invite to the family friend's French vineyard. The car has been excellent, and they have responded promptly to a couple of post-purchase questions.

And where am I going this week, to buy a used Golf?

You can probably guess.... Read more

Most dealers don't do ANY work on a car kept for PEx.. in my experience. Some punters are dumb enough to buy teh car as is. -- so saving the dealer money...

I have a Peugeot 207 diesel 1.4 and I am having a few problems with it.

Sometimes when I lock my car via key fob after about 10 seconds the window wipers and head lights come on until I unlock the car. But before this happens The airbag light comes on!

I was driving the car for about 5 mins and the window wipers just came on... I tried everything to turn them off; pulled the window wiper stick back to spray the screen, still didn't turn off. Turned the car off (key out) and back on & still it didn't go off.
I tried to turn it off again by taking the key out of the ignition barrel and back in and attempted to re-start the engine but then the engine wouldn't start again... I turned the key fully again and the engine still wouldn't turn on, all of the dashboard lights and radio were all working but I couldn't hear the starter motor trying to start the engine.

I tried once more to start the engine after leaving the key out for about 10 seconds and it started finally!! ( pretty embarrassing as I was in KFC drive-thru) but when the engine started on the little display above the radio "breaks failure" came up but the breaks worked fine? Even still the window wipers were still active!

If anyone could help me with this I will be very happy

I agree with that. Water ingress is a common problem on 207s.

I have a question about headlamps. Which are better for night time dipped beam driving on unlit roads, LED or Xenon gas discharge? (ie not H4 or H7 bulbs with Xenon gas). How do I define better – gives the greatest benefit to the driver in terms of light spread and ability to illuminate the road ahead. I note that nanny EU has insisted any car fitted with Xenon headlamps has washers and are self-levelling, but this does not appear to be the case for LED headlamps. I also note that some motoring magazines have run comparative testing for different versions of H7 (or H4, I’m not sure) halogen headlamps, but not included LED or Xenon in their tests. ... Maybe it's a response to what they see coming towards them. A vicious circle?)
