Hi - probably had the answer to this before but this one is slightly different. I have been sent notice of intended prosecution for the above 'alledged' offence - but - although the I did cross the white line, I did not go through the junction. The van came to stop about 1.5 metres over the line, the brake lights can clearly be seen on both photo's sent to me by the police thus proving what I said in the original letter of being true, I did stop but over the line.

I commented on this when replying back to them but its a ticket office and they have no say in the matter. ... Read more

Ok thanks everyone - I'll sign up!!

Look at it this way, if you got the points for the offence, insurance for the next year or two would probably go up quite a bit, so the £75 to take the course and avoid the points is actually quite cheap.

Hello, i'm having trouble locating/working the reversing light. I can't seem to find the switch that turns the light on. I think its under the car somewhere near the gearbox? or is it internal ? I really need this light to work as i now park in a very dark carpark etc.... violins can now stop.

thanks for any help... Read more

Having had another look at Haynes - and under the bonnet of my 1.4 - I suspect the switch is on top of the transmission, under the battery and distributor. Not easy to get to, but you should be able to tell if the wiring is connected.

Had a few problems with the head up display which notifies bulb failures. In particular the rear fog lamp.

After changing the bulb which made no difference, i swithched the light switch to the fog light position and this did the trick. But it has left me puzzled. There are no details in the handbook and the owner is simply told to go to the main dealer.... Read more

The stop lamp has been fitted with twin base contact bulbs but there is only one contact pick up in the holder.

Do you think these should be fitted with single contact bulbs?...

Thanks for the info.

Although mine is slightly different in the fact that it seems to function as normal from a cold start. It blows cold when it should and hot when it should (after the system has warmed up of course). So the dash control seems to be working fine. It's only after a few miles that it will only blow hot...

The temperature gauge inmy 2013 Multispace, whilst on a run, suddenly went off the top of the scale and a stop warning came on. I stopped and checked under the bonnet and nothing indicated overheating, the fans were running but nothing was too hot.

The car went in for a warranty repair and a temperature sensor was replaced. Now the car according to the temperature gauge and heater, is running 50-60 degrees on an open A road. It has all the signs that the thermostat is stuck open.... Read more

I carelessly drove over my hire car at 40-50 mph over a high speed hump (maybe 0.5 metres high). I am outside the UK and was under the speed limit. The car briefly lifted off the ground and the front smacked down REALLY hard on the other side of the speed hump. The suspension bottomed out and I think the front of the car impacted the ground.

Something is definitely damaged - the car looks OK from a brief visual examination (although the front bumper has a 1 cm gap on one side so must have been crunched when I touched down). I drove a few metres but could hear a nasty irregular grinding/crunching sound from the engine area and it felt a bit weird so I pulled over and parked. There is a nasty smell coming from the engine and the car now does not restart - all of the dashboard lights come on when I turn the ignition key but nothing happens.... Read more

What could have been broken ? Anything. Literally.

You might have damaged the steering. The suspension. The gearbox casing. The engine sump. The engine mountings. The suspension turrets (which would then be a major bodywork repair)...

I would also check the battery connections, take the clamps off and give the insides a good scrape down to bare metal and the posts. You could also connect a meter across the battery and check what the voltage is when you try to start it, if it drops very low you have a battery or connection problem.

I have seen some really good prices on ex demo/service cars. I'm a little hesitant about buying one - should I be wary about demo cars or should there be no problem in going ahead with a deal on one? Read more

The key to making your decision is finding out exactly what use it has had. All sorts of labels are attached to nearly-new cars - ex-demo, ex-rental, hire, management, staff, .... You just have to ask the right questions and look at the V5 (reg.doc). There will be no service history of course. And look for any evidence of resprays.

It's certainly true that too many people are borrowing beyond their means, although I wouldn't agree with those who say 'you should never borrow'.

I wasn't going to do a PCP this time, but Skoda were offering 0% finance so it seemed silly not to....

Hi, I was just looking for some advice about which used car is best to buy?
I'm only 21 and not got a huge budget (1500 is probably top end). I realise that I'll be looking at an old car but I'm at a loss as to which ones would still be considered reliable? I'll be going abroad next year with my degree so it really only has to see me out for a year, but I would be doing regular trips to York and Blackpool ( I live in Newcastle) so needs to be okay with long journeys!
Any help is appreciated as I do t have a clue!

Focus 2002 1.6 LX (alloys and a/c) with 80k miles should do it - just check the cambelt has been done. One of these served me well for 3 years and I put another 40k miles on it trouble-free. Seats and suspension better than Zetec in my opinion for comfort.

I'll second that. I drove a Focus Mk1 1.6 for the first time last week and couldn't believe how good it was to drive. 105k and it felt tight and solid. Sweet engine. Really good chassis with a nigh on perfect ride/handling setup - no roll around corners. Good brakes too. The cars are lasting well. You could pick up a good one for £1500, and they are cheap to maintain.
