Golf Mk4 1.9 TDI - Golf Mk4 1.9 TDI Starting Issues - louise82

Hi There

hoping someone may be able to help, recently my Golf started having issues when starting, sometimes from either cold or once engine is warm if i start it it wont turn over and the alarm sounds once, occasionally it will then start but nine times out of ten i have to put some jump leads on to get it started.

This seems to be an intermittent problem as does not happen all the time, the other thing i noticed is when it does this not all of the locks have opened on the car, could this be an issue with the alarm, immobiliser or battery? or something completely different?

Any help would be much appreciated as it is causing me a right headache especially when it wont start in an awkward place i.e petrol station!!!

thanks

If the locks are playing up it's a good sign the battery is low.

Do you do lots of short trips or perhaps it's an old battery.

Would suggest you get it checked by a local battery specialist who will be able to load test it.

I would also check the battery connections, take the clamps off and give the insides a good scrape down to bare metal and the posts. You could also connect a meter across the battery and check what the voltage is when you try to start it, if it drops very low you have a battery or connection problem.
