Audi A4 B6 2003 - Rear light bulb layout - Steveieb

Had a few problems with the head up display which notifies bulb failures. In particular the rear fog lamp.

After changing the bulb which made no difference, i swithched the light switch to the fog light position and this did the trick. But it has left me puzzled. There are no details in the handbook and the owner is simply told to go to the main dealer.

Can anyone let me have details of the bulb layout just in case some previous owner has used the wrong bulb i.e the stop lamp has a double filament. and an explanation of the fault

Many thanks

Thanks Quicksilver.

But any idea how I can check the bulb layout and whether the right bulbs have been fitted to the stop lamp circuit.

Cheers

Handbooks are usually quite good about telling you which bulb goes where, if not a perusal of the bulb holders will show you whats what.

Most single bulb holders will be single centre base contact plus side earth with symetrical locking pin guides, applies to typical 5w side lights and 21w single stop or white indicator bulbs.

Stop/tail combined bulb holder will be two base contact side earth with offset pin guides. Easy to confuse those with amber indicator bulb holder which are single base contact with offset pin guides, but you'd soon know due to flashing.

Very unlikely to come across a twin contact single purpose bulb holder with no side earth contact on modern cars, but often found in some usually older commercial vehicle designs.

I used to have a 2001 A6 Avant, (not sedan). It was a lease car but I remember that it had two reversing lights, (one each side) and two fog lights, (one each side). The bulbs were standard 21W single filament.

I would imagine the sedan is the same?

Thanks for all your useful guidance.

The stop lamp has been fitted with twin base contact bulbs but there is only one contact pick up in the holder.

Do you think these should be fitted with single contact bulbs?

Cheers

Probably not.You can't buy a single contact bulb with an offset base contact. If you take a look at the bulb holder unit there is usually the bulb wattage embossed in the plastic.

From memory I think these were single bulbs, (21W) on the stop light. Try replacing and see if it cures the problem. However, I recall that dual filament bubs are not meant to be fitted in single filament holders. Were they hard to remove?

The side lights were 5W or 6W small bulbs. I think there was more than one?

Sounds like someone's stuck the wrong bulb in there.

Its clottish things like this why some large companies who operate lorries don't allow drivers to fit bulbs any more, before now i've found twin contact in single holders, single contact in twin holders, and headlights bulbs jammedin any old how or upside down, quite how they can be so useless at such as simple task is worrying, and its getting progressively worse...these companies don't let them top the engine oil up either and to be honest i don't blame them one bit.
