"Knock for Knock" is entirely different to split liability eg 50 / 50.

Knock for knock was an agreement between participating Insurers whereby they agreed to not pursue each other for accidents between their customers irrespective of blame. So in effect the Insurers paid their own customers own damage claims (Assuming they were comprehensively covered)...

Go back to basics. A Diesel engine needs clean fresh air and good compression along with fuel to start. Is this a common rail engine? If so it'll be direct injection, and glow plugs will not be essential for cold starting. When cranking can you see smoke puffing from the exhaust? If you can then fuel is being injected, and the problem will be a lack of intake air or poor compression. If you can't then a fuel problem must be suspected. Either fuel draining back overnight or excessive leak off. You must NEVER crack an injector pipe on a common rail system. Apart from being potentially dangerous you will not be able to get a proper reseal, and new parts will be necessary.

If it has a more conventional injection pump then it's probably an indirect injection. In this case check the glow plugs, especially if smoke is puffing from the exhaust when cranking. Otherwise the most likely cause is air ingress between the fuel tank and injection pump. Check the fuel filter and housing for possible air leaks.

My car has just failed its MOT on Parking Brake: efficiency below requirements, and recording little or no effort.

When i asked what could cause this i was told the carwould need to be inspected at a cost of 30 quid, and could be due to a variety of causes but wouldnt specify a) what, b) minimum and maximum costs involved and c) could it simply be that the handbrake needs tightening?. He was quite unhelpful in all honesty... Read more

MOT test is an inspection. They are not allowed to dismantle components. I am assuming this vehicle has drum brakes on the rear. At our station we would state the MOT failure with a cost "subject to strip". It could be adjusters, cable ,worn shoes. At our garage at a guess you would be looking around £100 mark for the repair. THe problem with stating numbers is that a guestimate to some customers becomes a LEGAL QUOTE./CONTRACT. We would adivse a customer who is concenred about the cost to approve an hours expenditure which muight be enough to affect a repair by adjustment and then state Customer will be contacted to be given a quote for the remainder of the work once the scope is known. It relies on customers, having a contact pohone with them so you dont get the thing in bits on a ramp and find the customer is uncontactable to authorise a set of new shoes etc. If you go to one of the mentioned fast fit places please ensure you have a belt and braces fitted to your trousers

Hi All. Joined the motorway slip road, accelerated, lost all power and slowed to a halt. huge trail of oil.n.s.f whell lathered in the stuff. Inspected by garage engineer who concluded that the turbo popped first, causing all the oil to be sucked out. bits of the impeller went into the engine and gnarled at that.

I was fortunate to find a genuine LR replacement engine, crated and ready to fit, via an internet search. An independent specialist is fitting the engine. I havent gone down the LR dealership route as the initial quote was @ £14000, this way I can do it for @£10000. Whilst looking at LR and RR forums I found that a number of others had suffered similarly, and so though I might have a go at clawing back via the manufacturer.... Read more

Low mileage is no good for diesels, they don't operate at high temperatures for long enough and this leads to problems. I have suffered the results myself.

The engine will be full of carbon and oil deposits which have found their way into all the galleries and eventually into the turbo.

Hi ,
I am trying to fix the ABS on the above jeep , front bearing replaced including abs sensor as it was s/h it was better to include the abs this way and was guaranteed and resolved the bearing issue it had .
The sensor has a resistance of .624 ohms and the rear sensor on the diff is also .625 or as near, this I thought was needing replaced as there is no speedo reading . Checked the speedo for functionality and it works ok.The front drivers ABS reads .623 also. I am therefore wandering if the readouts I am getting are all wrong or right , I have no idea what they should be but I read on other articles reading should be around 1000 ohms .
What I havEn,t done is test the sensors while revolving the wheels individually.
The lights are still on of course and no ABS functioning.
Can you help with further suggestions as I am stuck a bit at the moment .
The car is out of test and tax so npo hope of getting to a dealer, they are out my expenditure any way.
Should I be checking for power to the abs as well?
Cheers Pat Read more

I have had the front abs sensors giving a pulse on Mv but nothing off the rear sensor on the diff , although it measures the same resistance as the front two.

The sensors have two wires and seem to have a diode in them as the resistance shows higher one way to the other.ie 3.20ohms compared to 18.3 the other way , perhaps explains the plus and minus showing in the plug end....

In the end the water had caused the bearing to fail and the pump jammed and broke the timing belt. The result being bent valves etc. Like your grandad that car got scrapped after he left it on my drive for too long.

Poor design. One of the reasons I decided never to change my A6 V6 cambelt was because the water pump is driven by the flat, not toothed, side of the long strong belt. In the very rare event of pump bearing seizure only the most insensitive of drivers would fail to notice a problem before the belt fried. ...

Hi everyone iam new on here last week my Focus suddenly had a engine malfuction, and lost power RAC came and did a diognostic test. He said it was either a faulty sensor or a loose pipe as it was very loose when he took the pipe off. However the engine malfunction has been coming on frequently since then sometimes after 5 miles or after 50 it also says it needs a oil service. The local garage now have it but had no idea so they contacted Ford. Ford said it was either thebturbo or the EG something or other, the RAC guy said the turbo was working fine. Has anyone got any idea what it could be. Dont want the garage to put in a new turbo if its caused by something else. Hope someone can help.

These later model 1.6 tdci engines are no where near as problematic as the original versions.Has the fuel filter been replaced recently?A blockage here is enough to cause the engine to cut out.

It is usually the ignition switch that needs replacing, not the barrel.
