Steady Anna

My Golf''s engine emits a light rattle when the engine is accelerating or under load. It stops immediately the foot is lifted off the accelerator. The noise is quite quiet, especially from the driver's side but this is probably because the passenger can pick it up being bounced back off roadside walls etc. It does not increase with road speed and remains at a fairly steady frequency as the box changes up through the gears. I have mentioned it to my dealer twice but it doesn't perform for them when I've taken it to them for a listen. The car is 11 months and 9k miles old. Read more

All you can do is make sure you get the car serviced properly - at a VW main agent. You've got another 2 years for it to break, and them to have to fix it, as long as you do that.

I am thinking of buying a Mondeo as I have read that it is good for towing small caravans. I have a small two berth caravan weighing approx 750 KG. My budget is limited to £2000 and so I will be looking in the 75000 to 110000 mile range. Now I am not bothered about the engines as such as I'm looking for the diesel version but I am very concerned about clutch/DMF failure and so I was wondering if an automatic Mondeo diesel would be the way to go as I've heard that they don't have a dual mass flywheel. Any advice would be welcome. Read more

Going automatic would indeed negate the issues of a DMF failure, but you're also opening a can of worms that are auto gearboxes which do go wrong too, and the bill to repair an auto probably will be far more than DMF and clutch!

I know the issue of 3 child seats in back of medium size hatchback has been done to death on the internet, so I apologise for that.

My research on the internet has let me to believe the following:

1. It is likely to be possible to have 3 backless boosters in the back of most cars. However these offer less protection than high back, or infant 5 point harness.

2. MPVs like Renault Scenics and Citroen C4s have 3 distinct seats in the back so likely to be able to have 3 child seats. But not everyone likes this style of car.

3. I found uncertainty as to whether the more popular medium hatchback cars like Ford Focus, VW Golf, or Opel Astras will allow 3 child seats in the back. For example, there is a Which test (article available on internet if you google) that suggests that Astra's allow 3 seats in the back, but Focus's don't.

4. However i have found theads on the internet that suggest that its possible to get 3 child seats in the back of Focus's but not Astras. So im confused.

So I would be grateful if anyone can advise if they have ever seen 3 child seats in the back of a Golf, Focus, Astra or similar model. Preferably in a 2010 or newer car.

I dont want to wait till I have a new car before going to Tony Kealy's or Eurobaby to test if/what 3 car seats work together.

Also remember that child seats sit snugly into the individual seats of an MPV. In a regular hatch or saloon, the rear seat is dished for two with the middle perch being a hump. Not ideal. Also, expect very limited space to lean over to clip belts etc. I would always go for an MPV with three kiddies in the back, all in some form of child seat.

Will you be looking to get rid of yours soon before the bottom drops out of the market?

No reflection on any of the posts on this thread, but we still have two current threads on this issue and one is less confusing. Could you please use the other one if you would like to comment further.

MK1 Focus. Buy as cheap as you can get, with history, and low number of owners, and keep the change. Don't go to a dealer at this price. A warranty for this age of car isn't worth having. Nothing better than looking an owner in the eye, when you buy his or her car. Dealers can pull the wool over your eyes.

I just wondered if it is at all beneficial to have a car of interest inspected if it has had an MOT in the last month: is the inspector likely to just come to the same conclusions as the advisory points on the MOT?

Thanks in advance Read more

If you are not mechanically minded and I suspect your not just by asking the question then it will be well worth your while to have it inspected. I suggest the AA or RAC with whom you've got a come back if they miss something. An MOT test pass certificate only means it was of the set standard on the day it was tested. You have also got to consider that if there is anything wrong of anything goes wrong with an old Jag is going to be expensive to repair.

Hi all back in march I purchased a C 5 from a local garage that was taxed till sep this year.
I received a letter from DVLA advising the vehicle had not been tacked since 26/02/2014. After checking there web site etc and discovering the disc had a different reg number on it. When I informed the Garage they checked there paperwork and the reg no belongs to the previous owner who transferred the plate to his new car. He then applied for a refund for the disc on my car leaving me with no tax. So who gets the blame for this the garage who have given me the money towards taxing the car on e they were aware of the situation me for believing the garage even though the tax disc related to the vehicle . Or the previous owner for getting a refund and not telling the people he sold the car too. And finally what do you actually tax the vehicle or the registration mark on the vehicle. Read more

RobJP

Who is responsible ?

1. The previous owner. They are supposed to retain and destroy the old tax disc. A few years ago, you actually had to send the old disc back to DVLA for destruction....

Hello All,

My daughter is about to change her job, which will involve a sort of shift pattern. Her present car is a company car that she will return, the new job does not include a car but pays mileage. She is looking for a small car that is reliable due to driving to and from work at unsociable hours. She is considering leasing/personal contract. Instinctively I am against this and favour the purchase of good nearly new car. However I don't really know enough about leasing to argue the case, except I always thought that buying was the best option, certainly from a financial point of view. Does any forum member have experience of leasing etc and can pass on some useful comments?... Read more

Can someone please explain to mean the meaning of buyer beware and private vehicle sales.? I am due in court tomorrow. . In Sept last yr I sold my horsebox I had owned for 18 months. I had never had a problem with it and had travelled approx 8000 miles in the time I had it. I listed it on eBay n sold it to a lady in south of England. She won it on the Saturday n collected the following Thursday. When she arrived I gave her all documents to look through. She said she was unsure her horses would fit and I said she didn't need to take out of she didn't want to.

You dont mention the origonal sale value. The small calims court limit being £10k and in this niether party requires a solicitor, and in most cases the wining party cannot recoup any solicitors costs, or any other costs

Go to court with all your paperwork and hopefully a copy of the origonal advert. Based on what you have said, the persons claim will fail....
