I remember a friend replacing his brake pads on a circa 1998 Vectra - simple enough job, he thought; done it on other cars in the past. But when he'd done it, he found that the brake pedal went straight to the floor, and he finished up somehow having to get his car to a garage with no brakes.

If I remember, it was something like: pushing back the pistons in the calipers had 'flipped-over' the seal on the piston in the master cylinder??... Read more

Railroad.

Damage to the master cylinder following brake pad replacement was very common on Astra F models. I used to work in a Vauxhall dealership and myself and my colleagues have all been caught out. It's good practice to open the bleed nipple when pushing back the pistons in any case, but essential on these models.

Just for interest I entered the reg no. of our well cared for reliable 100,000m 14yr old Focus estate into the on line 'we purchase any old rattletrap' box. £148. No, I haven't missed a zero off.

Nice to know it's stopped depreciating! Read more

I've spotted a 2011 i40 with 82,000 miles. What are peoples thoughts on such a car given Hyundai's 5 year unlimited miles warranty? Currently it's averaged 28000 miles a year, we only do 6000, so at 6 years old that average would be down to 16000 a year. And the poor thing deserves a rest LOL. Read more

Sorry to read that. However, in my view, its better to miss a good buy ( others come along ) than buy a money pit.

I hadn't done sufficient research and bought a diesel (2007) ( 3 years ago and I didn't know about this forum. It was not suitable for my motoringand has cost me significant amounts in bills, e.g approx £1,000 for new DPF....

Hi everyone

I have 2007 vauxhall vectra 1.9 Diesel on which is I'm facing power loss for sometime whenever going uphill or even when when it's just a little steep. Engine management light came up previously showing EGR valve to be an issue. I had EGR valve changed and error went away but then after a week or so engine management light came back again. I didn't bother then but now that I have an OBD reader in plugged it in and it's showing P1125 (image link: i58.tinypic.com/2urnjg7.png). Any idea what to look for it is there anything that I can try myself before taking it to mechanic. I don't know much about cars but I am willing to try and fix it myself without breaking it further. ... Read more

I've seen a lot of posts regarding this fault but they all seem to of been posted quite some time ago so was wondering if anyone had found out a deffinative answer.

Issue started a week ago with the EAC fail error showing up while travelling down the M1, lost all acceleration, pulled over, turned car off and on again and all was fine. No issue for a week after that.... Read more

Ive read on a few sites that the main cause for the issue normally comes to to the sensors on the pedal. I've seen people have spent 1000's trying to get this annoying issue solved.

I bought one on Thursday and have just returned from Lidl having taken it back. It's a pretty good piece of equipment (as most things from Lidl/Aldi seem to be) but it takes up an enormous amount of the windscreen and is very intrusive. Having a mini video running only just out of direct eyeshot showing what you are seeing straight ahead is very off putting (it is for me, anyway). In addition the cable to the cigarette lighter socket adds to the distraction factor.
