Until the 1960s schools spent considerable effort into teaching reading, writing and arithmetic. This included spelling, punctuation, comprehension and mental arithmetic.

Then the word went forth from the 'experts' that it cramped childrens' self expression if spelling and punctuation errors in their work meant marks deducted. Next we had the metric system, calculators allowed in exams etc. etc.... Read more

We have been lucky enough to have been given a second car, a 1997 Honda Civic 1.5. 98,000 miles and six months tax and MOT. The red paint has faded a bit but it goes and stops fine and should last a couple of years. This will prove very convenient for family life but sorting out insurance is proving tricky, and potentially expensive!

I will be driving both cars, but my wife only the Yaris Hybrid as she only has an auto licence. I think that I can only use my no claims (9 years worth) on one policy and one car. And this is where it might get expensive!

If we have my wife as the main driver on the Yaris she hasn't any no claims as she only passed in March. And comparison sites are quoting £1500 with me as a named driver.

If I have my no claims on the Yaris, and my wife as named driver, then that brings the quote down to £300.

But, without my no claims on the Civic, then the quotes just for me is £1100! Which seems a bit much for a car worth a couple of hundred pounds!

Any ideas? Multi car policies don't seem much help. Has insurance shot up in the past year? We had a years free insurance with the Yaris but even before that the Doblo was only £250 a year fully comp. Somebody somewhere is making lots of money! Read more

Thank you for all your replies. The cheapest quote we found was through a classic car policy for £522, which still seems rather a lot. So after speaking to our kind benefactor who gave us the car we decided to pass it on to someone else who currently doesn't have a car. The convenience of a second car didn't justify the cost in the end. We would probably have needed it maybe once or twice or week, but because public transport is very good we can manage perfectly well without!

An extra £80-90 a month, including tax, servicing, petrol and insurance is something we can do without at the moment, especially as my wife is about to be a student for two years. It's a shame really as the Civic is a nice car, and I'm sure will do a few more years reliable service, but sadly not for us!

My wifes C3 has developed an intermittent power steering fault. One minute it is fine and then nothing. Taken to two trusted garages and they can't help without spending a fortune. Tried various forums and it seems that Citroen garages are clueles too except for billing. Anybody got any ideas? Read more

Hi,

I have recently returned from 6 months working abroad. I had been informed while I was away that my car would not move, I suspected the handbrake had seized sue to cold weather. I since learned it wouldn't start (although it does now), I put the car into gear using clutch and try to accelerate. This does nothing other than rev the engine, I then figured through trying other things that I can freely move the gear in and out without the use of the clutch at all. All this occurs while the handbrake is still seized.... Read more

"I had been informed while I was away that my car would not move" Who tried to move your car. It sounds as if they have burnt out or broken your clutch. Regards Peter

I have a long standing problem with my clutch system that is beginning to drive me mad. I will try to describe it as thoroughly as possible so please bear with me.

The basic problem is that the cutch is not smooth- It is very difficult to pull off smoothly from a standstill and changing to second gear is also jerky.... Read more

IIRC,the gearbox with clutch operating arm on top of box is cable operated clutch-the one in the box is hydraulic.

I am off to Spain for a few weeks in the near future and am looking for some cheap breakdown cover whilst drving through France/Spain, does anybody have any recommendations? Read more

You get Aviva's European breakdown cover which is RAC free of charge if you take a motor policy with Aviva through a broker but not if you go direct.

If you want breakdown in the UK you pay a smallish charge but the European part is free...

I am a retired chartered engineer thinking about buying a nearly new Fiesta Zetec and it would be interesting to have the torque curve for the new engine.

I would also, of course, be very interested to have comments about this engine. Read more

Hi Andy again.

Got the graph from that website but oddly it didn't show 170 Nm at 1500 rpm which Ford claim.

I wonder if the introduction of E10 petrol (with a higher biofuel content) will spoil the small turbo petrols making them even less economical Read more

Thanks for a great article - I couldn't agree more with your sentiment - I also think that petrol is the way to go, especially for around town/urban area because of the health problems. I'm also hopeful that petrol with newer hybrids will be our salvation!

Wifes car has suffered loss of power on three occaisions the last few days the first two times the Glow Plug/Engine Management light came on and the third time the Emission Control light came on as well. Each time she switched off the engine and when starting again all was ok. I've told her to use my car and we'll take hers to the VW dealer when I get home (I'm working away for the next 10 days) Could this be a problem with the DPF? or some other electronic glitch. Car has done 18000 miles. Any ideas? I'll also phone the dealer tomorrow but would be good to have some idea of the problem beforehand and how much it will cost to fix! Read more

Crystal balls don't come cheap these days, but I would have a punt at there being a fault with the egr system.VW may be able to effect an ecu software update if this proves to be the case.hth
