11% fail on Driver's view of the road (180% worse than other 2010 cars)

I have been to see a used Volvo S40 & have agreed a price after but am having second thoughts based on a £10 HPI Check done via mycarcheck.com that show the vehicle having many thousand more miles than the car's digital odometer states (81k+). No other elements of the HPI check is of any concern & the car seemed fine when I visited it. The car is under MOT from earlier this year & I could phone back to ask the vendor for the either the MOT Test Number from the VT20 or the Document reference number from the V5C registration certificate (in order to confirm the odometer reading via the DVLA website):
But my questions to the forum include: How reliable is the National Mileage Register? And, why might the check (see below) only show upto August 2008?... Read more
Do any other members form a mental picture of posters triggered by the impression their post makes?
Some posters I imagine as the sort who wear trilby hats while observing every speed limit, others as maybe with baseball cap back to front, heavy metal music and making more rapid progress. ... Read more
KE has it right - that's certainly not you, GB.
Took my car in for an MOT today, having had a major service just last week. Other than a slight bit of welding that needed doing, the car passed. A few minutes after the test I go to start the car and it won't. The mechanics check and then tell me that the fuel pump has gone, and that it needs to be replaced. I'm no mechanic but I Googled common indicators that may suggest the pump is about to go. I had none of these, and nothing was mentioned in the service. The car itself 2002 and has done just under 150k. I'm not naive enough to think that nothing will need replacing on a car of that age, but it seems awfully convenient for there garage that it happened whilst in their care! Can't help but be cynical
So, do I accept what they say without question, or ask some serious questions about what they may have done whilst they had it. Trouble is, I don't have enough knowledge to argue Read more
Unclear from the OP's original post but if they did the welding after the test they would not have to start the car since only a Partial re-Test would be required. On this only the welding would need to be tested.
Could just have pushed it out of the workshop to let the OP find out it would not start.
The front speakers of my A4 cut out intermittantly. Increasing the volume can help on occasions. And to add to the pain the radio will suddenly lose the signal only to return when it is switched off and on.
Understand the wiring could be at fault and needs checking in the door area.... Read more
The radio signal problem is probably releated to the aerial amp which is located under the panel above the rear screen, or under the lift down lid at the rear right on an Avant.
I have the same problem with the o/s front speaker which Audi couldn't find a problem with when the vehicle was still under warranty, because its intermittant. ...
My wife has a petrol CX-5 fitted with 17in wheels using Yokohama Geolander tyres. The car has done 10000 miles. In recent weeks the ride quality has deteriorated noticeably. All road imperfections are felt through seat and floor. Most obvious in rear seats. Driving at motorway speeds feels like you're on a vibration machine! Local dealer had checked suspension, etc and can find nothing wrong. I understand these tyres are designed for off-road use. Could even modest wear cause the symptoms she describes? Read more

Help, my electric windows and sunroof have stopped working. The 10 A fuse in the fuse box in the car and the 30A fuse in the engine bay are good. Wiring from battery to switch proves motors and switches are all OK. There is a "circuit breaker (item 74) in the haynes manual, this looks like a candidate as it is common to the windows and sunroof. Where is item 74, the "circuit breaker".

Looks like it could be in the drivers footwell fuse/junction box.
I am about to buy one of the above and am curious to find out what the ESP is and what purpose does the ON/OFF switch above the radio have.
Many thanks. Read more
You would only turn it off when trying to set off on snow or ice otherwise its on all the time.
We are soon to replace our current gas fired boiler and immersion heater as they are over twenty years old and inefficient.
The question is, with modern systems do I need another immersion heater or will an instant hot water boiler do?... Read more
The process by which water is heated by sunlight does not involve a "boiler". And I'm pretty certain an electric "boiler", as such, is a rarity.

Suffered loss of power, on M6, on moving onto hard shoulder power suddenly returned, third time this has happened. Is it anything to do with the DPF regenerating? Read more
How long did the loss of power last for, several seconds? And was it as if the engine had died?
I don't think it would a DPF regeneration, it sounds too violent. My Mondeo IV 2,0TDCi used to sometimes give a little engine hiccup when a regeneration started - but it was for a fraction of a second, and there was no loss of power, just a very slight jolt as if you'd driven over a big pothole in the road and it had caused your foot to lift off the throttle pedal slightly....

There are frequently errors on the NMR which can throw up oddball entries and can be disregarded.
However, in this case, the data is consistant and I would investigate further before buying.
