Ford Focus - Is my garage shafting me? - PauliusG
Took my car in for an MOT today, having had a major service just last week. Other than a slight bit of welding that needed doing, the car passed. A few minutes after the test I go to start the car and it won't. The mechanics check and then tell me that the fuel pump has gone, and that it needs to be replaced. I'm no mechanic but I Googled common indicators that may suggest the pump is about to go. I had none of these, and nothing was mentioned in the service. The car itself 2002 and has done just under 150k. I'm not naive enough to think that nothing will need replacing on a car of that age, but it seems awfully convenient for there garage that it happened whilst in their care! Can't help but be cynical

So, do I accept what they say without question, or ask some serious questions about what they may have done whilst they had it. Trouble is, I don't have enough knowledge to argue

Petrol or diesel?

The fuel pump sits within the tank under the back seat. Was the welding done any where near?Perhaps they may have disturbed some wiring? Also have they checked the crash switch in the front footwell, this may have been activated whilst work was carried out on the car.If all these items have been covered, then it looks like a new pump is needed. Not a major job,but will need the tank to be dropped down.At 12 years old and 150k miles ,it could be the original pump,so not a bad run, realistically.I have assumed this to be a petrol,if its a diesel, then no pump in tank.

If they did the welding with the battery connected it could have fried the ECU.

If they carried out the MoT after welding, it must have started in order to do the emissions test.

Unclear from the OP's original post but if they did the welding after the test they would not have to start the car since only a Partial re-Test would be required. On this only the welding would need to be tested.

Could just have pushed it out of the workshop to let the OP find out it would not start.
