Are you sure you want a Polo when you can have the TSI engine in the larger SEAT Leon for much the same price?
The smallest-engined Polos are cheaper but they are underpowered and you'd be better off with an Up or its SEAT or Skoda sibling.

I'd like to thank everyone for your input, it's been a real help.
If I don't get any joy with the main dealer I think I will try the rebuild option, spoke with a guy today who has 3 pristine jags, two old mk2's and an xj12 he has excellent experience in engine rebuilding.
I've also seen a salvaged engine on a website with 5000 miles on it for £3000

It's a 5-year-old thread but there's no harm in resurrecting it.
DS cars are more expensive than ordinary Citroens, but (as with, say, Audi and Skoda) they use most of the same components. Usually the main point of buying the more upmarket brand is that it will hold its value better (as Audis do). I'm not convinced that DS cars do hold their value any better, and I personlly wouldn't be tempted to buy one....
Going to test drive a Vauxhall meriva 2011 CDTi 1700 automatic mileage 27,000. Any advice re things to look for, DPF replacement etc - anything which might help - will be appreciated. It is a trusted local dealer/garage. Thanks Read more

Anyone else had problems with a Fiesta gearbox. Car is less than 4 years old, 38K miles, full Ford service history. Unable to get into 1st gear and dealer has diagnosed a replacement gearbox.
Car is obviously out of warranty but a gear box should not fail at this age/mileage.... Read more
And if you add in the hours of labour to strip down and rebuild a gearbox,fitting a new assembly is probably cheaper!Especially as the gearbox change will probably be done by an apprentice/trainee under supervision and a gearbox rebuild would require a highly skilled fitter and still need to be taken out and refitted.
