When we were abroad in Jamaica last year we were transported around in a Toyota mini bus. They were the most prevalent mini bus on the island.

If you watch footage from many overseas locations you see these models being used all the time.... Read more

Some of the Heathrow rental sites used Toyota small buses, probably about 20 seater.

Toyota commercial stuff is tough and usually as simple as possible given legislations, they don't fix it if it aint broke, seems to apply to their Hino brand lorries too.

I have a Autotrail Cheyenne 2007 840s with a ducato 3ltr diesel engine, with 21k miles, only had it since last week. The problem I have is when I start the vehicle as soon as I let go of the key there is a clunking sound from the engine, it stops as soon as engine starts running....The engine runs fine. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Starter solenoid releasing the teeth from the flywheel? or rather the flywheel throwing the starter gear off when the engine overtakes the starter motor?

Same sound if you start with clutch depressed, or does this vehicle need the clutch depressed to start anyway?...

My car sometimes acts as if its hunting for revs. My odb tells me it goes from 700-900. Can feel it revving. Also on idle sometimes it will stay on 900rpm. Its a 2001 Ford Focus 1.6 Ghia.

Does it sound like the ICV?... Read more

Hi, Hope you can help with the following issue,

From initial start for cold [but not all the time] there is very erratic throttle response, drives slowly, then quicker by jerking forward feels as though it is misfiring [but the rev counter remains steady!] then after say about
¼ mile or so it'll suddenly drive normally, no further issues, until, i start it again from cold, although during normal driving it will occasionally start to slow with little throttle response, have to stop switch off & restart and that usually
clears it, no warning lights or any messages are displayed, except very occasionally "TRANS.FAIL-SAFE PROG".

Have taken it to the independent garage who services the car, checked diagnostics, it came up with Pensil coil issue which was changed, he cleared all the fault codes, changed plugs air filter etc., but the fault has returned... Read more

Has anyone corrected non-adjustable rear wheel alignment (on a front wheel drive car) using stock shim material. I'm thinking along the lines of placing a strip of suitable thickness material between the outer edge of the stub axle flange and the suspension arm. I've already calculated that a shim thickness of around .020" will be sufficient to give me the amount of correction I require but I'm a little bit concerned that as this method will introduce a slight gap, albeit a reducing one, between the flange and the suspension arm that it might compromise the integrity of the rear suspension.

Good idea, or should I forget it and go back to playing tiddlywinks?... Read more

Now, I had a noticable fault. What are you feeling in the handling that you don't like? Is it a similar problem to mine?

Thanks for the help. My problem is not so much a handling problem as a rear tyre wear problem. I had a 4 wheel alignment check carried out which showed the O/S rear to be toeing-in excessively but not quite on the manufacturers limit . The N/S rear isn't quite so bad, but I would prefer both of them to be close to the manufacturers neutral figure which is considerably less than the present setting. I feel sure that would cure the tyre wear problem. ...

Diesel.

I can't remember ever seeing a petrol Q5 (or anything similar with spark plugs). I think you might struggle to find a taker when you want to change it.

There have been many posts re automatics and manuals. Although I would like an automatic it is complicating choosing another car, e.g car I like doesn't have transmission system I'd like. What are the actual benefits/disadvantages between the systems ? For example is there any difference in reliability ? possible safety issues ? maintenance costs ? I do realise that it will vary between manufacturer but wondered if there were any general facts to bear in mind when deciding. I also appreciate it also comes down to personal choice but would be interested in learning from others experience. Thanks Read more

The 'nippy off the line' was based on my friend's mobility Corsa B. It only had a 1.2 litre engine but I'd say it was quicker than a manual from a start to about 20-30mph. And it was smooth. No lurching in first. Above 30 mph, though, the autobox was tiresome. It constantly droned, and it it sapped a fair chunk of what little power the engine had.

But around Oxford's traffic-light blighted roads, it was very effective. ...

Hi. Just wanted to find out from anyone out there if you have had any negative experiences with Halford's Authocentres and their half-price MOT offer?

My wife took her car in there. (I won't name the centre.) It failed on 2 issues: headlight bulb and brake pedal soft, ie excessive travel. The bulb was replaced at an indicative cost of £25 (but charged only £15). The brake pedal issue was indicated as possibly servo or master cylinder failure. Expensive items to replace.... Read more

Hi I have been a reader on this website for quite some time, but never posted a comment before. I could not resist when I saw the subject.

Several years ago (when it was still Nationwide Autocentres), I had a bad experience at the Exeter branch. I was lured by the offer of a discount MoT, but it turned out to be the most expensive one I've ever had. The alleged defects were rusty front discs and out of alignment headlights (on a young C220 with under 20,000 miles). I cannot prove the faults did or did not exist, although I do not believe they did, and I was furious with myself afterwards for not just taking the car away. As it was, I had taken the morning off work to get the car MoT'd, and just wanted to get it done. I believe - but cannot prove - that the work was unnecessary and that the brakes were never as good afterwards as before. I do know they got the discs from a local factor and charged circa 100% markup from the factor's website price. And I found lots of web complaints afterwards from customers alleging to have had unnecessary failures at Autocentres for rusty discs and headlight aim. ...
