Returned from shopping today to find the above stuck to my windscreen. There were no free parking spaces so, like others i the same position we parked partly pavement/partly road , no yellow lines at all.

Council tickets and private invoices are completely different things. It is important when appealing against either to follow the correct procedure, mix it up, or combine appeal points and you will trip up. The only bonus with private invoices is if you lose the POPLA appeal the decision is binding on the invoice issuer and not the registered keeper, so there is still no requirement to pay.

Hello daveyjp, Of course PCNs' and Invoices are different things, I don't believe I said otherwise. I said that the circumstances remain essentially the same. That is, whoever issues the PCN/Invoice has to abide by the current parking regulations either statutory or private. That means that it shall be clear to all who use the parking facility are made fully aware of the restrictions. If they do not abide by the regulations then neither PCN or Invoice have much chance of being enforced. Also the body that issues the ticket has to fully inform you about the appeals procedure, so following that course of action is common sense. Maybe my wording caused some confusion, for which I apologise.

Hi All, I am buying a 6 month old Passat 2L Diesel (140PS) from a VW franchise. Manufacturers warranty runs out in Aug 2016. I have enquired about extending the VW warranty and have been told something like £490 for one year and £890 for 2 years. I do about 15,000 miles a year.

Any thoughts on what questions I should be asking and in the absence of a crystal ball whether its worth it?... Read more

If it genuinely extends the warranty, ie will deal no quibble with anything other than wear/tear components - tyres, brakes etc - than maybe worthwhile compared to Warranty Direct or similar.

OTOH I've twice inquired about such extensions on Citroen warranties only to be told they were not available through that dealer as nobody had the requisite FSA certification

Please read my previous post on this but basically (Aug 2013-present) a knock developed from what seemed to be my steering rack and over many months the n/s/f tracking would go out and pull to the left, so had the tracking reset a couple of times. In February 2014 had a new rack fitted by my mechanic with a reconditioned one from Camberley Auto Factors plus the near and o/side front lower ball joints and n/s/f shock absorber and then had the tracking reset. Kwikfit had problems getting the camber/toe and straight ahead adjustments right. The knock from the new steering rack is much worse now, and my van still weaves/wanders a bit over bad road surfaces as it did before. It also has a tendency to veer left mostly but sometimes right when coming to a gentle stop, depending on camber/road surface. There's also the same knocking when going over bump/potholes, that seems to be mostly induced from the n/s/f wheel area. The front end also seems to roll a lot on cornering, and say if you go over speed humps when steering is in a turn right/left position. (i.e. - rocking from side to side) this can also cause the knocking. ***The knock can also be simulated by rocking the van hard from side to side with the engine off and the wheels in a straight ahead position. ***April 1st 2014 - Went to a Citroen dealer today who checked it out and said I need a new rack, as they said the rack is what's knocking! I told them I'd only just had a new one fitted! Their diagnosis seems very odd to me, especially when the original rack which was replaced had nothing wrong/no play in it. ***I'm beginning to suspect the knock, (which is felt in the centre part of the steering through steering wheel and down by my feet where the pedals are/bulkhead) may actually be caused by something else, and the knock isn't really the rack but something in the associated steering/suspension components. In other words, the knock can be felt at the rack but may be masking the cause. I can't see how two racks could fail like this. Can anyone help me nail this or suggest the next move?... Read more

i wonder if it could it be a failed engine or gearbox mount

I've got a 2004 1.9 Berlingo and the only knocking I had was when turning and going over bumps, it was the anti-roll bar links I think. Yours doesn't sound like a common problem

I am considering using a third party to re market all of my part exchange vehicles and over age stock - they would then pay me a commission on vehicles sold.

Has anyone else on here tried this before? Read more

No company registered under the name Motor Re-mark with and without the hyphen. Don't come up in a google search so I'd be very careful.

The Mazda thread on this site included a note from the US-based writer that their roads are not salted, so rust inhibiting was seen as less important.

Given a typical US winter, why not, and why then are ours salted quicker than a packet of Walkers when heading below 2C?... Read more

Salt on the roads? Not round here, Durham county council decided the most cost efficient way is to drive the gritters around without any salt onboard but with the light flashing for that nice placebo effect!

Hi Hoping someone can help me as I haven't had much luck with searching through the forum or the net.

My scenic dynamique 2004 won't start when I push the key card in and press the start button it sounds like it wants to start but nothing happens.
I changed the ignition coils and sparks plugs after a mechanic told me they were the problem but still it won't switch on! Also noticed while testing a few other parts that no fuel was getting to the engine it was dry as a bone!
After hours of searching the internet I am thinking it is maybe the fuel pump relay or the crank sensor.
I have cleaned the crank sensor which didn't work but I did notice it looks slight worn down so will buy another.

The problem I have is I can't locate the fuel pump relay I don't have a owners manual or Haynes book and can't find any info online either. I have tried to buy a replacement at my local auto centre but been told I need to remove the old relay for the part number.

Do you guys think it could be the fuel pump relay and if so where will I find it? Not very mechanically minded so easy instructions would be best! Ta

This thread is also in Technical (where it should be) - if you can help please see that. I don't know why it's in this section as well.

I've noticed some very powerful small turbo engines recently. Eg. Ford 1.0 gives upto 123bhp, which is similar to their 1.6, but has much better economy. On paper, it sounds amazing, but I wonder what they are like in the real world. Is their performance that good and is their fuel consumption comparable to a normal engine?

The only turbo I have driven is a Fiat TwinAir. I didn't really enjoy driving it and owners were reporting high fuel consumption. If I remember correctly you had to either completely abuse it for good performance (and high consumption) or you had to labour it and have no power, there seem to be nothing in the middle which is what I want for every day driving. I'd pretty much agree with your whole post Steve.

But the smaller petrol turbos tend to be geared around 2500 RPM @ 70mph-which isn't really lugging the engine down....

We have acquired a 2004 Punto 8v for my youngest son. Overall in pretty good nick and just in need of a little TLC here and there. The most pressing area requiring attention is the clutch release bearing which is whining badly.

It's been 25 years since I've had to do a clutch and back then I had access to a pit, hoist and all the tools I could possibly need. Now, it's going to be driveway job. Two new tools will be required. Firstly, a clutch alignment tool. In the past I used one of these:... Read more

Brings back memories of doing one on a Fiat 850. There was a large, thin metal plate on the bellhousing. Hang the pressure plate and clutch plate onto the gearbox input shaft, re-fit the gearbox then reach in the hole and bolt everything up.
