I fitted poly bushes simply because they were so much easier to fit than the OEM. Now I'm wondering if the suspension will be too ridged that something will break off perhaps the mounting brackets on the subframe. The original bushes are made to be springy.

Have I made a mistake? Read more

I wouldn't worry about it too much, poly bushes have some give in them. You'll know if it snaps off.

Hi all, just asking for a bit of advice, if any of you can help. My 19 yr old daughter gas a 53 plate xsara 2.0 hdi. She had a gates belt kit water pump etc fitted 12,000 miles ago, 18 months ago at her local garage. Engine was making a funny noise so she took it to someone she knew who is also a mechanic, who, to cut a long story short, discovered that the edge of the belt has shredded, and on further inspection found out that the tensioner had been fitted incorrectly. We contacted the garage who did it and finally he recovered the vehicle back to his garage monday and said he would put right anything that he had done wrong. When he was contacted today he said he hadnt looked at it but he said he hadnt realised it was so long ago, and i think is trying to wriggle out of doing it. The mechanic who discovered the problem said that the belt was guaranteed for 80,000 if fitted correctly, so where do we stand. Get it done somewhere else and try and recover cost via small claims, etc etc. all i know is she is without a car and she paid alot of money in good faith and either the belt has let her down or workmanship? I noticed the silver hue of a kerb approaching a bend in the road near to a small industrial estate and a council estate. That looks as though somebody, or a number of drivers, regularly kerb their wheels as they prepare for the bend. The bend is awkward, on a three way junction, and drivers often have to give way and crowd over to make way for bigger vehicles. When a wheel was kerbed in yesteryear the kerb became black from the rubber of the tyre wall. Now that tyres frequent are very narrow and don't have bulging walls then the wheel rim gets polished every time the kerb is brushed. Read more

Hi everyone, just bought a second hand Jazz, 50,500 miles 2007 reg car (a week ago). Upgraded from a Corsa, primarily based on Honda's well known reliability. Full Honda Service History, 1 previous owner. Noticed a rattle / tapping type sound on acceleration, I can sometimes hear it very clearly when the car is parked up and I rev it lightly, seems to kick in around 2,000 + revs. It is very noticeable when the car is warm (after my 28 mile commute home). Almost sounds similar to the timing belt rattle I had on the Corsa (but not as loud). Its different to the ticking sound the engine has anyway, hard to hear it when the car is running as the other engine / road noises drown it out, but when parked up it seems noticeable. Strange thing is its not a constant noise, I heard it when parked up, with my window down - decided to drive to my mechanic to book car in, and tried to get the noise back outside the mechanics and it was purring like a kitten.

Anyone have any ideas what it might be. The car has a 3 month warranty (not bought from Honda dealer) but I suspect that's not worth the paper its written on. Aside from that noise, very happy with my purchase!! Thanks in advance. Read more

You could check if the heat shield on the exhaust is correctly attached as this can rattle if it contacts the exhaust.

Sorry HTH to waste yours (and anyone elses) time.

Of course, it was not that at all. Going back to basics I took the new head unit out and the alarm didn't trigger at all. Put it back in and within 20 secs it triggered when locked....

I experienced a loss of power while some way from home, the car would not rev above 3000 making over-taking impossible. After I stopped for 10 minutes the problem disappeared and hasn't recurred for 6 month,s until this morning. Same thing again, after the car was stopped for a few minutes, the problem disappeared. A local garage mentioned this as a VW problem concerning the turbo-charger. Has anyone else experienced this? Read more

Railroad.

Classic symptoms of an over boost problem caused by sticking vanes in the turbo. The loss of power is itself not a fault, but safety protection to prevent engine damage. This is a common problem on cars that have done low mileage or have been driven too gently.

The car is 14 years old but only 145,000 miles and well looked after - 2 litre petrol Zetec. The aircon needs re-charging for the summmer and I would like to know a bit more about the components involved, compressor, condenser etc. Having owned the car for 12 years it's time for extra TLC - advice and guidance would be greatly appreciated. I have read elsewhere that a Michelin spokesman stated that there is no significant benefit in changing tyres at 3 mm rather than 1.6mm. Read more

I would advise always getting a second opinion as well. I got an MOT done down the road from me when I moved (having never been there before) and I didn't quite trust it. Went on this Who can fix my car site www.whocanfixmycar.com/ to find a proper mechanic and he told me that this garage I had been to at first was lying to me about the work he wanted to carry out on my car. Second opinion always counts.
