Today a work colleague was talking about accidents from the past. About 30 years ago he reversed into a virtually brand new Rover SD1 he hadn't seen. He told the Rover's driver he didn't have his insurance details with him, but as he worked next door each day the Rover driver should see him in a couple of days. The Rover driver duly turned up. My colleague had noticed the SD1 had been parked on a double yellow line. He said he'd been in contact with his insurance company about the matter. The Rover driver was illegally parked, so wasn't covered. Amazingly Mr SD1 driver...............hook, line and sinker! Read more
SWMBO has a (lady) friend who recently "lost" her brakes on a slope and rolled gently into the back of a HGV. She apologised and the driver said no damage but just swap details for the firm. (entirely correctly) her car has minor damage for which she does not want to claim for. She has been contacted by the other peoples insurance asking for her insurance co details, but does not want to provide.
swmbo and myself have tried to perusade her to give details of ins co, but she does not want another claim on her record. (She naively assumes that she does not have to!)...
Well it is designed to go [ahem] off-road...

Small gas turbines are less efficient than piston engines. The "lack of cooling" isn't really correct. If you want to push the efficiency of gas turbines, the first stages of the turbine blades run very, very hot. This creates the headaches. You're looking at exotic alloys, the best thermal barrier coatings, single crystal blades, internal gas cooling etc etc. In comparison, a piston engine's water pump and radiator are comparitively straight forward.
Edit: Gas turbines are very slow to start up and I don't think the materials would take kindly to the high numbers of thermal cycles that would occur in pasenger car use compared to, say, civil aviation....
I'm thinking about setting up my own website and I need some advice...does anyone on here have their own website? I want somewhere easy and clear to use as I am not great with designing things from scratch etc., and somewhere where there are ready made templates preferably! Any suggestions/tips are more than welcome. Thank you! Read more
Yeah,
I've set-up a couple, once you get passed the awkward part of getting your domain and choosen CMS to speak together then its pretty easy....
Hi, first post!
My missis, left the lights on on our 806 and subsequently had to get the RAC to jump start it.

Puzzled?

Maybe, but you do need to do the BSI reset if you disconnect the battery.
Lovely car but VW taking the p--s with the prices. Would rather buy a used Golf for the same sort of money!! Read more
A question for the engineers out there please.

You have a point where gradient climbing and acceleration are concerned, but railway trains often run at 90mph plus on level-ish surfaces, so weight is less important than air resistance. Torque per drag factor and frontal area?
The Inter City 125 could maintian 125 up Stoke Bank (where Mallard hit 120 in opposite direction). On HS1 - the line to the Chunnel - and on French TGV lines climb quite steep gradients at 180mph....
Hi, just wondering if anyone had any recommendations on a reliable honestly priced independent garage for servicing a 9 year old polo. I've been getting oil/filter/brake fluid changes at the main dealership (not had anything else done like belts etc so far). but having read through some posts on the forums it looks like i'm probably overpaying at the main dealership, plus i'll be keeping the car until its no longer roadworthy so not worried about full main dealer service history. Somewhere in Maidenhead /Thames Valley area that people trust would be great. Thanks Read more
Thanks for the tip! This place looks promising. I was considering a VAG specialist in reading that I found in the good guide but they turned out to be more expensive than main dealer!! Will give Harper Motors a call tomorrow.

We had an A1 courtesy car last week and the headlights were fine but was given to me with headlights on lowest setting and probably were a bit low even on the highest setting, but still did the job. The adjuster is a thumbwheel right of steering column.
