A family member who does very low miles , living abroad a lot, has lost the 2nd set of keys to this car, which is worth notionally £1500 ( low miles, full SH, new cambelt, Auto, SWB , never broken down ). Being short wheel base, auto and high it is perfect for London streets and frankly there isn't anything like it to replace it with, this model being discontinued circa 2006 , the only other being a SWB RAV4 which are not as reliable.
The Mitsubishi dealer wants about £120 just for the key, claiming it contains a transponder - car is a 2000 on a W plate , even though I just see a solid lump of plastic surrounding the key, and to add woe, the car has a Toad i606 Thatcham 1 alarm / immobiliser, again down to the one fob now. We have the 4 digit Master code that the alarm installer passed on, there is a keypad fitted in the glovebox. Had tried Toad themselves a while back but they were no use, no replies. I bought another similar fob but failed with the generic instructions to marry up to the car, a certain sequence of ' On / off ' with the ignition. I once succeeded on that with a Transit key so am not hopeless... Read more
After 38,000 miles and 3.5 years my Toyota dealer has had to replace the "Top intermediate shaft" on my Prius because of knocking from the steering (cost of £181 parts and £90 labour). I spoke to their Toyota Technician who told me this happens fairly frequently on the Prius. Toyota recalled all Prius models before mine for a very similar problem it appears. I've paid the bill to get my car back and asked for the Service Manager to ring me. Should I challenge this bill in your opinion and if so who with, Dealer or Toyota UK? Read more
Exactly.
Agrred, so if OP can confirm date of first registration then appropriate advice can be given, rather than a guesswork split approach....
Ive been looking to upgrade my Old 306 estate and originally was looking at an a4 avant but got put off by the oil pump failures on the 2.0 td Ive now turned my attention to a mazda 6 estate. When im researching this car there are a lot of reports about the dpf clogging up and dumping loads of fuel to clear it I just wondered if these are a good reliable car? Also is servicing costs going to be expensive? I generally do a basic service myself as well as exhausts, brakes etc. Im wondering if its easy enough to reset the service interval on these cars? Hi all.
I read an old post in which someone called LucyBC said that you could appeal the category which your car is listed as. Does anyone know if that is so, and if so how to do it?... Read more
You all will be aware that HMG are to do away with paper Excise Licences for motor vehicles later this year probably Oct 2014 as far as I can gather and rely on electronics ANPR.
This is contained in the Finanace Bill 2014 and there is more that I was not aware of and came across whilst trawling this massive tomb yet I gather to be brought into force all may find interesting... Read more
no i don't think that would be the case. the ved would still be active on the car untill change of ownership has completed this takes up to 4 weeks. thats why you get that little green slip which you can use only once to tax your car
Son in law accidently put 1/4 tank of petrol in his diesel van but immediately filled the remaining 3/4 of a tank with diesel. He did not start the engine with petrol only in tank. Has since driven van and has received conflicting advice on what to do: one garage says to have tank and fuel system drained; another independent machanic says it is OK to continue driving but not to over-rev and to add upper cylinder lubricant periodically.
Is it not the diesel fuel pump which is vulnerable to petrol because it does not contain oil lubricant?... Read more
It`ll do no harm to put half a litre of two stroke oil in for the extra lubrication it provides
Agreed, and top the fuel up again when you can squeeze a couple of gallons in....

Final update - Looks like luck was on my side ; Had a transponder key replicated at a new key facility trading out of a dry cleaners in my high street, £40 , works a treat..
then, managed to find an online forum and was sent the alarm's manual , including instructions on copying in a new remote, which came off fleabay for a fiver... after following the instructions, disregarding what must have been a planted wrong command ( said 'on' when clearly had to be ' off ' ) , I counted LED flashes, hey presto, pressed buttons and now I have a working 2nd set , key with remote, total cost £45 , not the hundreds quoted previously ....
