My Honda had what I thought was a slow puncture on the front near side tyre.
My local tyre supplier, Roadwheel, in Fleet, said that Japanese manufacturers used re cycled alloy for their wheels and that the tyre rim was porous. They burst the tyre and put sealant round the bead. All good so far. The other wheels seem OK.
Is the above scenario true? Should one be careful about cars made in Japan?
Personally I 'm sceptical. Read more
Apart from lousy fuel consumption, 28mpg on the M5 yesterday at 3000 to 3500 rpm. No other probs except for the following. When starting after use (engine warm or hot) it fires up and ticks over but there is absolutely no response to the throttle? It may flood and stall if the pedal is pushed to the floor, but why is there no throttle response at all? I had a diags test which appeared to show nothing at all but a "failed response from sensor". After a few times it starts and runs normally, no missing or rough running..
All hints and tips gratefully rcvd!... Read more
Which would also explain why there is a small time lapse prior to the starter kicking in! and the central locking sounds as though it's making that little "shoosh" noise as the starter actuall spins up. Fascinating stuff, many thanks. The extra cold weather would reduce the battery performance anyway. That is why the diags didn't show anything and I had no lights on. In fact thinking about it, the dash doesn't set for a couple of seconds either!
I get it tested, it is I think the original so 10 years old!...
My fiancée is keen to replace her Toyota iQ. We have almost exclusively driven Toyota's, but I do feel their reputation for reliability is fading with our local dealer in North Staffordshire being unable to diagnose / fix issues with the car meaning I've had to travel 25 miles on several occasion to get the car fixed. ( despite looking after my Auris well)
With the warranty now coming to an end and Toyota wanting an extraordinary amount of cash to extend the warranty it's time to move the car on.
She is more interested in the her cars looking quirky rather the driving dynamics. She is quite interested in the Chrysler Ypsilon twin air. I understand the car is based on the 500/panda. We need 5 doors and an reasonable boot. We PCP her cars due to her low mileage and want to change her cars often.
She's does not like the 500 ( not a 5 door) or Panda, what else should we be looking at as I'm out of ideas?
She only wants to spend £150 per month on a PCP.
Thanks in advance. Read more
A pram? Presumably not one of the old-fashioned full-size perambulators - or we'd be talking about something bigger than anything mentioned so far, with the possible exception of the Nissan Note.
If i;'s a buggy or one of those frames a car seat clips into, then maybe take it round to a few dealers and see what it fits into. You might get a good deal on the Ypsilon: it hasn't sold well becuae of the stupid decision not to badge it as a Lancia....

Just heard from a mate of a 2009 Range Rover Sport traded in for £19,500, on sale later at £24,000.

Its not just the motor trade that charges high hourly rates. I am paid about £15 an hour for my troubles yet the clients are charged £60 an hour for my time. We have modest offices in a 110 year old building that is cheap but mostly empty and the only equipment I need is a PC.
Simple answer to that one. Dump the employer, get a cheap office and PC, nick a couple of clients and charge them £50....
Hi, recently i had my motorcycle stolen from my property, it was insured fully comp with AXA. All documents were sent, and a a brief questionnaire over the phone was carried out. All going well till i chased them up regarding the claim. I was told that i had not disclosed a claim back in 2011. I asked what the claim was as i had no recollection of a motor claim, and was told it was " a trampoline hit a neighbors car" this was correct, as a storm had blown the trampoline onto a neighbors car and damaged it. The claim was settled by our house insurance, as our car insurance wouldn't cover.
So when the question was asked, if i had and claims, accidents or losses or damages in the last 3 years, i took this as referring to Motor claims, not household claims....as the question never asked to disclose household claims...any help would be appreciated. Read more
Have a good read of this link which you should find helpful.
Thought this was quite interesting, but then I've become a bit geeky about my oil condition.
Assuming it sort-of-works, I'd guess the marketing problem they still have is that an oil change really isn't THAT expensive, so better-safe-than-sorry is likely to prevail, and therefore most people wouldn't save any money by using one.... Read more
That'll apply to most people/cars, and I suppose it may be one of the reasons for the short shelf life recommendations, so they don't have to confuse the alphabetically challenged with API grades, etc.
Doesn't aply to my car, though, since API SD was originally specified, and none of my old oily plunder stuff is anything like as old a spec as that....

Out of gas?
Normally these systems are quite reliable and switch between the two fuels (once up to temperature) without a problem, either manually or automatically.
Is it an issues of reliability or perceived reliability Read more
I had only one BMW, a new diesel convertible which needed new air bags every month, it also had little electrical gremlins and to top it all it would often not start for around 5/15 minutes - this last issue was never resolved as as the cars computer never showed an error code the main dealer refused to even look at the car (Bracknell won't pay us) - had a 2000 Zafira that was a paragon of reliability compared with the Beemer :(

I don't believe alloy wheels become 'porous' - for that to happen the metal would have to lose some molecular material to create voids. What does happen is surface corrosion at the bead, where pollutants (such as road salt) creep in. That has happened to all four wheels on my Pug 207 not long after fitting new tyres, making it necessary to deflate them, clean the beads and apply new sealant (or lubricant). If the fitter had done that in the first place I don't think the problem would have arisen - it hasn't since.
It can occur round the valve seat too.
