There is a reason Peugeots are cheap and Golf's are expensive, partly because of the sentiments expressed in other posts .

Economy is affected more by the weight of the Drivers foot than anything else - the VW 1.9 Diesel is one of the most economical engines around.

Did a quick search and there's a lot of info about similar problems on the internet. One common theme seems to be battery terminal tightness or battery voltage low.Hope this helps.

Have had this car for 6 months. Its done 20,000 miles. It has developed a clonking noise when the clutch takes up the drive and when changing gear. I thought it was the DMF but the Toyota main dealer said it was the rear mid engine mounting This was changed but the noise is unaltered. Toyota is now saying that it is feature of the model - even though it was not present for the first couple of months.

Has anyone experienced a similar noise? Read more

I have noticed a LOT of CRV's for sale with just over 100,000 miles on the clock.

Are there 'problems' to be expected with greater mileages ?... Read more

Can anyone recommend a winter wheel size and tyre for my BMW F30 series 320d

Handbook is your starting point. BMW recommend wheel and tyre sizes, keep to these and your insurance company will be happy, you will still need to inform them though, mine charged me no extra.

Had car in for 30,000 mile service and first MOT. Also told the garage that in 4th gear about 50mph I could hear a whine on the accelerator - noise disappeared when foot off the accelerator. Garage did diagnostics. Fault bad clutch judder - the car has never had a clutch judder. They fitted a new clutch and flywheel under warranty. Got car back and I still have this noise on the accelarator.

Before I ring the garage has anyone any idea what this is? I am not "technically minded" being a 68 year old woman but I do notice anything different going on with my golf and the noise annoys me at this speed.

Thank you Read more

Hi

Back again about this noise after you advised is was probably a differential problem. I took the car back to the vw garage. Noise still there - they checked the turbo and said turbo ok. After I contacted VW UK they advised taking it to another VW dealer. They said problem was definitely a gearbox transmission diff problem. VW UK told me to take it back to first dealer. They have had my car all last week and rang today to say they have had the "cans" on and found it is a the turbo noise which is "normal". I rang other dealer and spoke to the guy who had taken the car out for the test run and he said it is not a turbo problem as it would sound like a police siren and it doesn't - he insists it is a transmission problem. VW uk will now take notice of the garage where the car is so it seems I have a battle on my hands. At least I have the reply from yourselves in August 2012 which does say the same as what the second dealer is saying. I asked the garage today why they think it is a "normal turbo noise" when you cannot hear the noise in any other gear but 4th or 5th at 50mph. It does happen they say.
Do you think it could be normal turbo noise?

Thank you
Anne

While adjusting the valve clearances, I got dirt on and in the rocker cover bolt threads, was interrupted, then, short of time, put it back together in a hurry without remembering to clean up the threads, releasing dirt into the engine.

Of course some damage will already have been done, and there'll be some abrasive that won't be removed by anything short of a full strip-down (embedded in the soft metal bearing shells, for example) so the best I can expect is to limit rather than eliminate it.... Read more

With equal respect.

You may well be right that taking the sump off wasn't worth the trouble, but I've already done it, so its too late to take that advice....

You make an important point there; that the mileage on vehicles is increasing. You should always be aware of how far a van has travelled before you place a bid at Commercial Vehicle Auctions. Read more

As keen students of the HJ Back Room will know I purchased a Jaguar S-Type last year and was jolly happy about doing so. Having now owned it for just over a year and having recently spent £475 on its newest Police repellent disc I thought I'd share my experiences with the Back Room.

It's a 56 plate 3.0litre petrol model in SE trim with the sensible 7 spoke alloys, black exterior and 'ivory' interior which is a posh way of saying nearly white. When I bought it the Sat Nav thought it was on the M1 all the time but that has been fixed and works fine. I've done almost 11,000 miles in it taking its total mileage up to 68k and it's been completely trouble free. No knocks, rattles, rumbles or anything. Everything works, started first time in sub zero temperatures and feels very solidly built.

Driving wise its superb, it's so quiet you wouldn't know the engine is on and you feel completely detached from the outside world as you drive around. Put your foot down and it does growl and shift pretty quickly and the automatic gearbox is much more intuitive and sensible than offerings from French carmakers that I've experienced. The steering is very good, road holding is the best I've experienced and the somewhat costly set of Primacy tyres I had fitted are excellent for grip while maintaining a very comfortable quiet ride (note I do not work for Michelin in any way, this is not a plug Avant). I've used it for general driving to work, long journies, short journies etc and it's just fantastic. It is a big car so parking it isn't always easy but it's hardly a cruise liner. Over the time I've had it it's returned 26-28mpg on average.

I love a car with lots of buttons to push, including a wooden (real or otherwise) dash and lots of leather so the Jaguar doesn't disappoint. I'm still afraid to push some of them. The stereo is spectacular and I've enjoyed cruising along to Ludovico Einaudi's new works. The only things I don't like is the boot is a bit shallow and the bleepy noise when you haven't turned your headlights off is stupid.

I was going to sell it on after a year but I'm struggling to find anything else I like so will be sticking with it for the forseeable future. Read more

Heres the deal. I have 20k to buy a car. After driving around in a 51 plate Laguna for the last 3+ years I could finally get myself something newer. My Laguna Privilege has been enjoyable to drive but it is now starting to get one fault after another.

So, today I went and looked at 2 cars that please my eye. A Nissan Qashqai (15k) and an Audi A5 Sportsback.... Read more

Mondeo.

Nope, it doesn't make me smile. Clutch and gas pedal are both far too lacking in feel, and gearbox is far too notchy to afford any real enjoyment.
