Slightly transport related, but many millions of milles away a rover is driving around on the red planet. I still see an awful lot of them here too. Well done, the ghosts of longbridge and cowley! Read more

Hi

I have noticed an electrical whirring noise coming from somewhere on the drivrs side. It seems to happen most when i'm in 2nd or 3 rd (although that could just be when i hear it more because of engine/ road noise). It's not very loud but happens roughly four or five times in a short journey (2 miles). Should i be concerned? Read more

Can anyone offer ideas for what could be causing a knocking sound when my car is idling. It happens when the rev count drops to about 600 or 700, just one knock and the pin jumps back up to 1000. It repeats in exactly the same way until i start moving again. I haven't noticed it at any other times. Can you suggest what it is?

Separately, there is an increasingly noticeable rattling coming from the passenger side dashboard. Any ideas?

Hope you can help!

Do you mean a single click, and then the revs rise? It may just be the Air Con compressor activating, this would put extra load on the engine and cause the increased idle revs. Try turning the Air Con off, and see if it still happens.

I believe early Sedicis' developed a rattle from the vent ducting tube behind the dash, inserting a piece of foam between it and where it's touching apparently solves the probtem....

Yesterday I took our beloved 1994 Mercedes E280 estate for her annual MOT. She's still going strong, and scrubs up rather well. The perfect car for weekend dump trips and furniture moving.

However, that's not the point. Over the course of the round trip to the MOT station, just 8 miles, I witnessed the following,... Read more

My late employers started putting company car people through a one-day asessment (this was about ten years ago), and jolly good it was too. They did because too many of the company car mob (senior management of course) were piling up their cars, and I think the insurance company was taking a dim (and expensive) view of it.

But all the assessments in the world won't stop people from texting while lighting a fag, or answering the phone while eating a sausage roll. Companies should NOT ring up drivers when they know they will be driving, and Ginsters should develop the crumb free sausage roll....

A few weeks ago:
I was traveling in left hand lane when a car drove from the right hand lane, without indicating/looking into my drivers side wheel arch. There is very minor damage to my car. The front left of her car is damaged at her passengers side wheel arch towards her indicators. The accident happened in my lane and she was behind me, I could only see her in my driver wing mirror. The driver stopped, we exchanged details, she denied it was her fault, said I was behind her and that she was only following her lane round. Now the lane that she was in has roadworks in it and is effectively a dead-end. I know this because I travel this route everyday - she wasn't local so prob didn't know this. She also said she was going to x road and in order to do this she needed to move into my lane, then the lane to my left. Police were called but wouldn't attend. I informed my insurers on the day of the accident as soon as I got home.

After 6 days she still hadn't reported it to her insurers, it was only when the 'claims co' got in touch with her did she respond. I wasn't sure I wanted to go through my insurance as I don't have legal cover. My car is ancient and has £600 of damage, therefore, because of lost-value car prob a cat c write-off. I got one of those 'claims co's' to contact her insurance and she still won't admit liability. However, they have not yet received her accident report and so may still admit liability. Her insurance co want to assess my car and hers.

I don't have legal cover, and my excess is £150. Should I

a) go through her insurance
b) go through my insurance
c) just leave it

and also, what are my chances of winning this given what has happened?

Can anyone advise?!? Read more

Hi all

The EM dashboard malfunction light on my wifes 27k miles car has been coming on and off since we bought it at 9k miles Despite going back to the garage many times they still don't know what the problem is. Last week they suggested it might be a cylinder head gasket(expensive job).It has never seemed to make any difference to the performance of the car but with the new approaching legislation about MOT and dashboard lights we want to sort the problem... Mrs Concrete decided to join a Gymnasium. They asked her to produce two forms of ID. One photographic and one proof of address.(Why I cannot think- ID proof to join a Gym-very curious)She duly turned up with her passport and her green paper driving licence, valid until 2023. The gym operative informed her that the paper licence was illegal and she has to have a photcard licence. When questioned it turned out this operative did not know why or when this curious 'rule' came about. Mrs Concrete told her she thought she was mistaken and if it proved an obstacle she would go elsewhere. At which point the membership was granted. Is it just ill informed jobsworths spreading misinformation? I would like to know two things. Firstly, why do they need two forms of ID for memebership of a common or garden Gym? Is it now a legal requirement to replace valid paper licences with a photocard? I would like comments from anyone who has experienced this and can enlighten me. Best to all. Concrete Read more

I can cope with security if it simple but quick, and effective. With my bank, if want to make an elecronic transer out of any of my accounts they text me a single use PIN code. Easy. I think it is the next stage from the calculator type authentication devices we use to have.

Hi, was driving earlier and felt a small nut hit the top of my foot. It had fallen down from above the pedal area on my 2010 Qashqai. On closer inspection (with a torch!) I spotted a small bolt/screw sticking which appeared to be missing a nut.

Any idea what this is? I've taken a picture showing the bolt/nut in question - it's high up above the brake pedal area. You can see it at http://img1.jpegbay.com/gallery/001870822/1_f.jpg Read more

I was recently involved in a rear end in my 4 week old Hyundai I40. The other driver has admitted liability and his insurance company have contacted me confirming this and offering to handle my case directly without getting my insurance company involved. The damage appears to be cosmetic only involving the replacement of the main bumper, bumper cover mouling and tailgate cover moulding.

Unfortunately their nominated repair company are not "Hyundai approved" and as a result the delear I bought the car from says using them may put my warrranty at risk [the main reason why I bought the car].... Read more

If the repairs are carried out at a Hyundai dealer, then the replaced parts will still be covered by the original warranty - if it's repaired elsewhere then replacement parts will be excluded from the warranty.
