Got a problem that's just turned up in the last couple of days. My Polo (1998, approx 90k on the clock) has suddenly started playing up when trying to engage 5th gear. Works fine on all the others but attempting 5th almost always drops me back into 3rd instead. I can get it after a few attempts but this is a bit hair raising on the motorway.

I know approx. f-all about cars...any ideas what this might be, and a rough guess how much it could cost to repair?... Read more

My wife and I are renewing our car insurance, and would like to double check what we do, and do not need to declare.

1. In 2011, my wife was driven into, driving my car, as a named driver on my insurance. The other driver was at fault, and our car was written off. I'm confident I need to declare this. ... Read more

Better safe than sorry, grit your teeth and tell them all, it's the only way to be sure.

I bought an used Honda Jazz 1.2 i-VTEC SE [VSA] (a little over 2 years old with a 59 number plate, manual transmission) from a main Honda dealer a month ago. The car has only got 14,000 miles on the clock (13,700 miles when I bought it a month ago). Now I notice that when I pull away from still and change from first to 2nd gear after the car reaches about 10-15 miles/per hour on the first, the car judders and produces a 'clinking' sound. However, if I change to 2nd gear immediately after the car starts moving (say at 5 miles/hour on first gear), then it seems to be fine. There is no such a problem in higher gears/reverse gear.

Has anyone else got similar problem? Could the clutch/gear box be faulty? When I bought the car, the sales guy told me it was their curtesy car. I am wondering if the clutch is on the way out? But for such a little mileage, isn't it very unusual for the clutch to be worn so quickly even for a curtesy car (unless many people drove it rode the clutch).... Read more

Agreed, Honda dealers generally don't seem to take for granted their customers like some others.

Be very surprised if they don't fix this sharpish.

Hi, my problems with this car are well documented on other posts so I won't repeat them now. To cut a very long story short I had the above vehicle on lease but with a non maintenance contract (big mistake I know).

Initially I dealt with VW myself getting the warranty work done and using their loan cars. However, I then involved the lease company because the problems just kept on coming. Eventually I lost patience and legally rejected the car as being unfit for purpose and not fulfilling the (implicit) terms of the supply contract.... Read more

Hi as,it's possible that the fso would take an interest .However from reading previous posts on various forums it seems a lengthy process .Then you're left with the prospect of trying to have them enforce the decision .

They seem to be a bit like trading standards ,fairly ineffective organisations .You seem to have to continuously flout the law before they take any action .

The great thing about the small claims court is that it is cheap ,quick and their is no appeal after a decision is made .

Also it's consumer friendly ,if you have a reasonable case, judges will generally favour private individuals over corporate bodies .They are difficult for companies to deal with ,in that they usually have to have a solicitor to deal with the case .

When a large company looks at the cost of dealing with a claim for £2 or £3000 pounds .its often cheaper for them to settle the case before they have to attend court ,although they usually wait until the week before the case to settle .

I claimed against a large holiday company about 5 years ago ,they initially offered £100 in vouchers .We finally settled on £800 plus court fees ,It's just not worth their time to attend court .knowing that they will probably lose .

Just seen the link, this does say "absolute pressure" , which may mean that as ambient atmospheric pressure is on the other side of the wastegate diaphragm the boost at which it opens is 32 - 37 psi minus ambient of 14.7 psi i.e 17.3 - 22.3 psi.

does anyone know which was the latest production model of any make diesel to use an inline fuel pump or the earlier type rotary Bosch(non electronic, fly by wire) thanks Read more

Peter.N.

The last fully mechanincal pump that PSA used was on the Jan '96 reg 2.1 XM' estates, after that time they used EPIC semi electronic pumps and were all auto's that's why I always went for that model, I had four all with the reg N---YBL, I'm still running one.

I think the Xantias and ZX's may have used them a bit later but they had an armoured fuel solonoid that you couldn't get at.

I think I may be needing a little bit of help, guys. You see, I drive a "60 reg" Ford Fiesta, that's on a PCP (I drive it for 3 years and give it back) The problem with the car is, my Wife says that we need a new car, due to the fact that it's only a 3 door, and we're looking to have a family soon, so we need a five door. I have looked around for another new car on a PCP agreement, and most places that I've spoken to want up to two two grand to swap us into another car, and the repayments go up by £40 a month!

So I've had a look on Auto Trader, and spotted this:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...n/radius/100/page/2/postcode/cb12lt?logcode=p

Now, I need (no, I MUST have) a car that is totally 100% reliable, as I'm the kitchen manager for Meals On Wheels, and I work 7 days a work (hence the new car - as I do upwards of 15000 miles per year) So, why am I looking at a ten year old car, that will no doubt fall apart on me ASAP, as I will run it into the ground?

I think I may be falling in love with the K11, that's why! My Wife thinks I've gone nuts, but working on my Mum's old Micra, has rekindled a lost feeling in me, one that I had when my Mum was still around (R.I.P.) I just love tinkering with cars! (Shame I'm crap at the mechanical side of things, though......)

Would it really make sense to swap out a brand new car, for a K11? As I have stated, I don't know sweet FA about cars, and if I don't go to work, I don't get paid, so I need a decent car. Have I lost it? It would make sense to get out of paying through the nose for a car I don't own, though..........Cheers : ) Read more

We always had 3 door cars with children - they can't fall out of the back when they get bigger. I'm going back to the days when we had two children and a mini 1000 (with a baby and a 4 yr old) and then moved up to a fiesta 1100!

We now put baby ish grandchildren in 3 door cars without too much of a problem so my advice is stick with what you have got. You know the car and the costs....
