With the engine off, gear selection is fine. When the engine is started, first and reverse gears won't engage. Could this be a clutch/DMF problem or something else?

If clutch, is it possible to fix a standard clutch kit to the existing DMF? Read more

Peter.N.

This problem is almost certainly due to the clutch not disengaging properly, presumably you are having to push the pedal right down to the floor. I assume its a hydraulic system which means you can't adjust it, but its worth checking the system first before blaming the clutch itself, some clutch slave cylinders are inside the clutch housing so it has to come off anyway.

I don't really know the system on this car so maybe someone else can give you more information.

If you are sure the glowplugs/relay are okay and it is temperature dependant, it might be a weakening injector pump, ie poor pressure/spray pattern. If the compression is okay this is the next think I would look at.

Cheers, no worries. I still have the original bulbs and they take less than 2 minutes to change, so come MOT time, i'll just change them. If I don't get pulled over, then I guess there's no problem either!

I'm assuming I'm pulled, they'll just ask me to change them?...

You really have to baby Li-ion batteries to get decent life times out of them.

Which is probably why Toyota actually use NiMH packs then.......

Now my car is running. Just had to change the plugs. But now i have a new problem. Car does not have the power on the fourth and fifth gear. And perhaps giving the gas engine will sound horrible. As would be heating mixture bad or injectors were spraying badly diesel fuel.

my vw t4 2.5 tdi water pump seized resulting in the cam belt breaking but worse still the cam shaft broke in four places, on removal of the head there appears to be no piston damage , just wondering is there a simple way to check for bent valves before re assembly. thanks in advance Read more

Peter.N.

A visual check will show any serious problem. If they all move smoothly from top to bottom without any resistance they are probably OK but a definitive test would be to pour diesel down each inlet and exhaust port and see if it leaks out of the valves, a small ammount of seepage is permissible but if it pours out it needs attention.
