Hi there. The Centre pipe on the 1.9 diesel does indeed host the cat, fortunately, you dont need the cat fitted to the exhaust, its only the petrol engine version that needs a cat, I bought a Berlingo 1.9 cat BY-PASS pipe from ebay (£35) 4 years ago, it passes its MOT every time and was easy to fit.

I just thought I'd post about some good news relating to a main dealer, and a VW dealer at that.

There is a very good reason for the negative comments about the main s******s. No redress is needed.

I asked my VW main s****** whether they replace the engine mount bolts when they drop it for a cambelt change, because these bolts are over-torqued at the factory. The answer? Thats right, no suprises there then. (BTW, Haynes says to always replace them)...

A mate has asked me to put up a question regarding replacing his Estate with a newer vehicle.

He currently drives an `04 plate Focus Estate which has covered 125,000 and has never given any real bother in the four years he`s owned it and returns excellent MPG.He`s moved all sorts in it including 3-seater settees.... Read more

Skidpan, thanks for the Focus model info and the Kia plug, looks interesting. Are they really more economical than the Ford?

My measurements say it is but not by much, probably 2 or 3 mpg.

Understand that these can be a pain due to seized bolts....?Haven`t had the wheels off yet to have a gander,so can anyone tell me if it`s possible to do a quick change...ie just remove top nut,cut spring with slitting disc, pull out leg far enough to get new(compressed) spring in place?Anything else to look out for or that may require replacing for a spring job? Thanks Read more

Last weekend managed to get the car serviced as recommended in the VW handbook (and the flashing reminder on the dash). It was the 60,000km service - which meant the following:

1. New Fuel Filter... Read more

Is it my imagination or are there really less cars on the road now. I think my area has less traffic due to people cutting back mileage due to fuel prices...diesel past £1.50 a litre here and I guess most other places too. My MP has has replied that the Government is doing a good job on keeping prices down.......
Aviation fuel is now taxed adding considerable cost to flights, rail fares are high too. Travel is getting to be a luxury. Read more

This car (only 37,000) miles has had a "notchy" gearchange for years. Having recently driven a Ford with a lovely gearchange I am wondering first is the Merc faulty or is this a common feature? Secondly it seems like a good idea to change the gearoil in which case has anyone had good results and which oil did youuse? Finally with the rear drive is there any linkage to lubricate or is the stick straight into the gearbox? Thanks in advance for any advice. Read more

Changed the gear oil for Redline MTL today, it's totally transformed the gearbox. 1.2l instead of 1.5 as reccomended by Mercedes.
I can highly recommend it for the 6speed SLK R170 and the mk1 1.0 Yaris.

Avensis Tourer has a flat floor in the back (no transmission tunnel hump). Worth looking at? Not sure how wide they are.

My car fell to pieces last week, so I bought a VW TakeUp. I like small cars and I run them into the ground. Anyway, the sales chap told me they had sold half their years allocation already, ~35 cars. Anyone in the trade know if he is likely to be correct, or is he trying to make the car sound like it is in high demand?

Anyway, I had the choice of a brand new base spec Ford Fiesta for £8K, or the VW Up. Am I mad? I've driven the Fiesta and didn't like it, and I think they are ugly. The Up is cute, and has much better mpg which matters to me. The VW dealer have given me a (free) loan car until I can take possession of the car. They will not release it until they get a replacement for the showroom. I imagine they could lose sales if they had none for the punters to prod. It sounds a good deal to me, not that I know. VAG have very strict quotas so he may be correct - it keeps second hand prices higher. We were interested in the Citygo to replace our Aygo until I read it has a cambelt and VAG change intervals for them change with the wind.

Ours would be a low mileage car and a few hundred quid to change a belt and tensioners bumps up the running costs so we won't be considering one.
