Intermittantly the EML comes on and the Vehicle goes into " Limp " Mode .

Diagnostics have cleared the Codes but the Fault has re- occurred .... Read more

To simply alter the electronics to ignore the EML function is quite a task to isolate the sensor or component causing the problem not so hard but having found the problem it is just as easy to repair it.

If its a genuine fault look to the EGR valve first.

I have read in this weekend's press that for France, headlamps have to be adjusted to the Right. In the old days, you could place beam adjusters over the lenses (where marked out on the lense) to deflect the dipped beam to the right. These days, there are no guide marks on the outer plastic covers where to place deflectors. Are defelecters still valid and if so where do you place them. I have driven in France (and other euro countries) for the last 40 years (lately not using deflectors, but with driving common sense) and have never been questioned. Is this new legislation or just a confused journalist?

I'm resident in France, when we arrived here 3 years ago we used the louvred deflectors called Beam Benders on one vehicle and masked the lights on the other using black tape to lose the dip beam kick-up to the left. I am not aware of any new law for visitors restricting the use of temporary measures. Just use common sense and be certain that your lights don't dazzle oncoming traffic and you should be ok.

BTW I tried the eurolite deflectors previously and found that they were close to useless.

All,

I am looking to purchase a used diesel for my daily commute. Commute is 95% on the M25, 120 miles / day / 600 / week. Looks not important, neither is size as will be used only for my commute. Would like some recommendations for models / decent milage that is in the 2000 - 3000 range. Do have a parts exchange that may take budet up to 4000. Would like to get at least 2 years out of the car, and understand I am looking at a car with at least 80K on the clock. Would like to get at least true 50mpg. Been researching several models (Ford Fiesta / Focus / Mondeo), (VW Golf / Polo / Passat), (Peugeot 206/306, 207/307/407). Fords I know, just not diesel side of them. VW are always suggested, just hard to get model in price range, milage I am looking for. Peugeots are 50/50 depending on who is talking. Seems diesel engines are good, just electronics are shakey. Again not too fussed about looks / functions as long as it get me from A to B to A, day in and day out with minimal upkeep. All help is appreciated. Read more

I am not married to a diesel, but I am not sure I can get the 50+mpg in a petrol car for th price I am loking for. Also a little concerned about the 30K+ miles a year on it

I think a diesel is a must for this work, as evenb though you may buy a petrol with near-diesel economy, getting caught in a few slow moving jams on the M25 will destroy petrol MPG completely, as well as the wear aspect.

I understand the need to conserve water during this drought, but how fair is it? If I wash my car from my hose and outside tap, I could get a fine. If a commercial valeter calls to wash my car, he uses my hose and doesn't?

Legally, could I wriggle out of such a fine. Their criteria for informing the public is to have published in a couple of daily newspapers, a few local rags, the internet and TV news. What if I have not had access to any of these and I really don't know there is a ban on?

My defence would be that my bill is sent to my address and my contract with my water company is between our two addresses. I would demand that they either post a restriction or put a relevant leaflet through my door. That way I cannot avoid the advice. It would also be cheaper than publishing in press, or is that free under the circumstances which means they are too tight to letter out.

As it stands, are they on a sticky wicket when it comes down to fines? The reservoir near me, Shepperton, is full to the brim! Read more

Many reservoirs, perhaps the big majority, aren't used for collecting water from rainfall or stream feeders but for storing water pumped up from rivers, not necessarily that close. That way winter rainfall in rivers can be stored for use later in the year - at least that's the theory.

There's a considerable amount of water moved around by pipeline - for instance water falling on the mountains of Wales is collected in the Elan Valley reservoirs and pumped to Birmingham for consumption there - in Birmingham, the ground water no longer needed by heavy industry is pumped into the River Tame which flows into the River Trent but before it gets to the Humber it's extracted and stored in Lincolnshire for local use....

My car has a factory installed sat nav. This is a 2002 model, and I have recently bought it. Tried the sat nav but it wont read the CD and says no map available. Do I need to invest in a new CD? I maybe using the thing incorrectly - all I have done is pop the CD in, and hit the appropriate button. Says it's reading the CD, but then nothing happens other than "no map!" Help Read more

Sounds like the map CD may be on the way out.

First try cleaning it (household window cleaner) and see it that gets it to read....

Honda have announced that production of the new Overdrive And Parking transmission, which will be an optional extra on forthcoming Jazz models, will start in June. It comes from months of monitering driver behaviour. Chief engineer Taemin Owasaki said: "most drivers like to select a low ratio for manoeuvring, and progressively move to higher ratios as they pick up speed. But sophisticated monitering equipment built into the cars' Engine Control Module revealed that Jazz drivers did not follow this pattern. Jazz drivers like to start in fifth and set the revs to 4000 for low speed manoeuvres. When the driver pulls out into oncoming traffic, he invariably selects lower ratios and finally drops into first when the desired cruising speed of 7mph has been attained.

"We realise that working through the gears backwards can be awkward for drivers. So our revolutionary new OAP transmisson will retain the familiar H pattern but the gears will be reversed:... Read more

Hi ,the car is almost certainly a stolen recovered vehicle ,it means that the owner was paid by his insurance company ,and the car was recovered by the police at a later stage .
The car will have this information permanently registered against it by HPI ,it's not possible to remove the information from the system .
Because of the HPI marker the car will always be worth less than a car without it .Because of this marker you should be paying substantially less for the car than you would normally , about 20% less would be a rough estimate .

If the dealer is willing to sell the car at that kind of price ,get the rac to do a full check on the car ,the cost is about £200 for the check .Potentially the car has problems that an rac inspection would reveal .

The price is the main issue with a car like this ,if the price is right it could be worth buying .Do remember though ,that when you come to sell it on or part exchange it .That it will always be worth less than a car without the marker .

Good luck

Now being reported that the Home Office Forensic Branch working alongside its American counterparts at Harvard University, after 5 years research ,have perfected a procedure whereby from a photograph of human skin they can magnify down to show the structure of the epidermis and from that extract the DNA of the person in the photograph.

The implications of this are tremendous, not only in the fight against crime but imagine motoring offences where speed cameras involved. No longer will it be possible to deny being the driver at the time of the offence as when the new Fully EEC Driving Licence is brought in, it will contain within its chip, the DNA of the individual. Game set and match to DVLA and the Safety Camera people.

Professor Loof LIRPA, i/c the project, is confident this procedure will be available to the authorities within the next 2 years.... Read more
