My car has a suspect turbo problem (white smoke from exhaust). Can be driven 3 miles to the garage? Its a 2002 auto estate (just in case ot makes any difference)
Thank you... Read more
Bought this automatic car in 2002 when it had 4000 miles.
Since then I have driven it 163,000 miles. I've changed the oil 37 times, the gearbox oil 5 times and had new discs/brakes/tyres 5 times. Nothing else has been changed Same battery, exhaust, rad, timing chain, pumps, belts, plugs, wipers, wheel bearings, CV joints. Never even a puncture or light bulb failure!... Read more
I have changed tyres brakes five times in 160K (I was buying new tyres every 40K)...I also drive slowly, on the M-way I keep at a constant 60mph.
Another case of brake pads/discs wearing out through lack of use. I like to coast in neutral and my brakes seem to go on forever because they get a good work out just through normal driving. All of the engine braking fan friends seem to go through discs every 30,000 miles and they grate horribly all the time. Hot discs are clean, quiet discs!...
Hi,
Need some help, having a meltdown!... Read more
I suggest you get the garage to look at it, something has done awol somewhere and it needs diagnostics plugging in to see if anything shows up.
Intially the electrics started to play up - lights stayed on , no display on the dash .It started up OK but when we tried again theres nothing happening at at all . the only thing that works is the radio. Any ideas or pointers ? Read more
Firstly check and clean your battery connections, if you connect a voltmeter across the connectors the 12 volts will likely dissapear when you put a load on it.
i have a ford focus 99 and it wont start i put a new starter in but its still not starting and th insturments are doing a full sweep but they have been doing that for a long time Read more
Make sure it's a calcium battery, not a lead acid battery otherwise it'll go cranky again.
Can anybody help, I recently part ex my car with £500 for a car at a garage, Then two days later after the deal had been done and dusted and having the new car for two days the garage has phoned up saying my old car, in the past was at some point a CATD write off which I new nothing about, they are asking for an extra £500 where do I stand Read more
Ah, I think it is Cat C that has "Cat C" recorded on the V5 because the V5 has to be returned to the DVLA. A Cat D has no structural damage and is just a repair. Providing OP didn't lie to a direct question, it appears that (s)he is in the clear. My mistake!
Well the visibility is on a par with a van. Quite clearly rear seat passengers are not intended to see out! http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-york-motor-show-2012/new-york-motor-show-hyundai-santa-fe/261776/pictures/new-york-motor-show-hyundai-santa-fe.aspx?im=500639 Read more
And the second row, virtually no sideways visibility unless passengers are tall - hence van. Bobbin, agree with you on the Focus. It is now just a 4/5 door coupe, just plain awful!
Dismantling of an ELV ( End Of Life Vehicle ) is normally done in an ATF ( Authorised Treatment Facility ) which needs permission from EPA ( Environment Protection Agency ), licences, etc.
If a private individual wants to dismantle onetime only 2 or 3 Cat C / D salvage vehicles ( NOT ELV's ) in an automobile workshop, does he still have to go thru' the necessary red tape, or can he do so without ? Automobile workshops DO handle and dispose of waste car fluids appropriately during servicing.
If bureaucracy is to be followed, does it mean that a hobby / occasional mechanic CANNOT ever dismantle a vehicle ???
If the issue is all about possible pollution of the environment, cant a person collect and appropriately store the waste auto fluids ( depollution ) and hand them over to a 'Registered' ATF, along with V5C, when they come over to collect the vehicle shell, so that they can dispose respective wastes / recyclables accordingly ? This way EPA's fears are laid to rest, DVLA formalities are taken care of, ATF has scrap metal & waste oils to sell, I have my parts..... and everyone is happy ! I dont see anything wrong with this
MVDA ( Motor Vehicle Dismantlers Association ) recons that even for such, permissions & certifications are necessary
Where is the thin blue dividing line and limits for such a scenario ? Can some kind souls please look into this, enquire, lobby for the affirmative and let me know what I so much want to hear
Thanks in advance,

No way! Expect at least £200 for any car with scrap prices so high.
I don't know when Ford started fitting their 'smart' charge system. I know that lead/acid isn't advisable with it, but how do I tell if 'smart' charge. The handbook doesn't help. Read more
Have a look and see what the original battery is.
Unfortunately it's not my car and the owner's had the battery replaced. It just rang alarm bells for me.
Both my wife & I have automatic 2003/2004 Mercedes C & SL class respectively - having recently read about the problems of leakage between the coolant and transmission fluid parts of Valeo radiators I am anxious to know if our radiators are made by Valeo.
But when I look at the radiators I can see very little of them, because of a cover over the top and a big cooling fan at the back.... Read more
This problem arose several years ago. I would have thought that even if these cars had Valeo rads, if the problem has not appeared now it is not going to.

Aside from the fact that the turbo could disintegrate on the journey with the engine devouring the metal that comes its way and causing more damage its sounds like with white smoke coming out of the exhaust it would be a hazard on the road anyway for other road users?
I would suggest having it transported.
