mercedes slk230 (2003 manual 6 speed) - gearchange on 03reg mercedes slk230 - atrier
This car (only 37,000) miles has had a "notchy" gearchange for years. Having recently driven a Ford with a lovely gearchange I am wondering first is the Merc faulty or is this a common feature? Secondly it seems like a good idea to change the gearoil in which case has anyone had good results and which oil did youuse? Finally with the rear drive is there any linkage to lubricate or is the stick straight into the gearbox? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi, I have the same with my 00 SLK230. I've been reading up on the problem. Mercedes recomend lowering the oil level by 300ml. Many owners have changed the oil for Redline MTL which is a 70w-80 GL4 synthetic. I think this is the route I'll try, the MTL really helped when I use it in my Yaris. Let me know how you get on.

Changed the gear oil for Redline MTL today, it's totally transformed the gearbox. 1.2l instead of 1.5 as reccomended by Mercedes.
I can highly recommend it for the 6speed SLK R170 and the mk1 1.0 Yaris.
