There are only three parts that go down. The windings will last for years unless you put a screwdriver in them, or try to clean them.

1. Bridge rectifier / aka diodes. Likeliest suspect.... Read more

I've been down this road a couple of times with great success. There used to be an auto electric place in Aldershot that would sell you any of the bits needed for a repair. The onlyu alternators I ever fixed were the old Lucas 16 or 18ACR units which had separate regulator and rectifier packs. The brushes were also dead easy to change.

I dont think I'd bother if the bearings were shot but everything else is faie game.

I have a 2007 2.0L diesel. I thought my washers had frozen so cleaned them with a pin.

I then tried the washers and no jet onto the windscreen...checked the fluid and it was OK- not frozen. The fluid was coming out of the jet at a good rate but wasnt jetting onto the screen.... Read more

Buster C had an unhappy experience with a Skoda. He was unlucky as satisfaction rates are very high for Skodas. But quite understandably he doesn't want to risk another VAG car, at least for now.

Well that's one way of putting it, take one excerable, badly built and unreliable Skoda. Add a handful of incompetent dealers, a pathological liar of a service manager and a wholly complacent manufacturer and you'll start to get close. Cost my business thousands, not just through poor reliability but continued inability to get first time fixes....

Some of these, well, actually most are very amusing!

I've got a car on HP, and one of the conditions is I must inform them if I change the registration number. They say they "may charge a £30 fee", which I guess means "will charge".

I've got a number on retention that I'd like to transfer to the car, and I wonder if they can enforce this clause, or if they'd know or care if I just changed the number without saying anything.... Read more

If you have the car on Hire Purchase, you won't own the car until either the final payment has been made, or the Hire Purchase agreement settled early. The finance company retain title to the vehicle during the period of the agreement. Effectively you are renting the car from the finance company until the agreement is completed. Legally as they retain title to the car, then they should be informed of any change to the registration number. I suppose if you don't notify them of any change, they could view the change as possible fraud - ie making changes to the identity of the car.

Assuming that yours doesn't have an armoured pump i.e. you can get to the stop solonoid, just run a lead from its terminal to a switched ignition supply, that is if it turns but doesn't start.

If the starter is not turning its possible that the ignition switch is faulty, rather than change tthe switch you could 'modernise' it by fitting a push button switch between battery+ and the small connection on the starter solonoid....
