February 2012
I purchased a secondhand Renault Scenic MPV in 2010 (manufactured in 2007). Overall it works fine except for the Gearstick. If the weather gets cold, particularly if it is minus 3 or below, and if I keep the car outside overnight or for more than 24 hours, the Gearstick freezes. It takes a minimum of 10 minutes or a maximum of 30 minutes to unfreeze the gearstick, by turning on the car and putting the aircon/heating at full blast. I sent the car to the Renault garage 3 times now and they tried different things (changing the gearbox oil/fluid, cleaning rust etc...). But unfortunately, I still experience this problem every winter.
My questions to you are,
1. Have you ever come across this problem before, particularly with Renaults?
2. Is there a permanent solution to this problem?
3. Are there any short term solutions, to get the car moving in the cold/winter weather?
Cheers.

Failure of the plastic gearbox linkage is very common on the petrol Corsa C.
Perhaps the proud makers of the marque have elected to carry this hallowed tradition forward.
I've got the excellent series of Classic & Sports Car A-Z of Cars starting with Cars of the 20s and finishing with Cars of the 80s. They're excellent reference books, not to be confused with the coffee-table rubbish you usually get for Xmas.
Sadly the series concludes with 80s. Can anyone recommend books of similar quality that deal with the 90s, and maybe the noughties? Read more

I thought the 'dirty car has less chance of passing MOT' thing was just a myth. Whether the paintwork is clean or not has no relevance to the condition of the car. The last time i looked, polished paintwork wasnt an MOT requirement.
The speedo stops when the engine has warmed up, also the odometer doesnt clock up any miles when the speedo not working, the engine cuts out when the clutch is down Read more
Likely a faulty speed sensor or a broker wire to it. Regards Peter
When the engine has warmed up the speedo, odometer stops working for 5 to 20 miles when stopping the car and foot on clutch the engine cuts out, I've been told it could be a switch on the gearbox Read more
Could be a faulty speedo sensor on the gearbox.
Can anyone explain to me why someone would break into a car and steal the airbag from the steering wheel?? I would understand it if they had tried to drive the car away and needed to remove certain parts of the steering column but they took the actual bag?? Confused! Read more

I wrote to the council a while back to ask whether they could put up a mirror on a junction that is very very difficult to see down (actually impossible). A lot of the locals take a detour but that is ridiculous. Anyway, the council wrote back and said that there had been no crashes there so nothing doing. This isn't correct as we, who live there, all know that there have been accidents.
They also said that a mirror cannot be erected because it isn't DoT approved. Fair enough, but if France can use them on their blind junctions, I can't see why we can't get them approved.... Read more
it should be remembered that the view given is when your head is level with the end of the junction, so your bonnet and front wheels are in the middle of the carriageway.
The streetview cameras are also at least 4 feet higher than a car driver's head, so the view is a bit better on streetview. ...
Hi
My girlfriend and I bought a 02 plate Fiesta (£1950, about 60k miles) from a dealer at the end of November. It came with a 3 month warranty. Within the first week a fault developed whereby the engine management light came on and EAC warning flashed resulting in a loss of power. We contacted the garage and they agreed to take a look at it but in the time between contacting them and taking the car into the garage, all seemed fine, so we agreed with the garage to "see how things go" and take it back in if the problem occurred again....
