I have just registered toattend the Speed Awareness Scheme on 5 March 2012 for a tickect for driving at 32mph in a 30 mph zone. Offence took palce in Nov 2011. I have paid the £97.02 for the priviledge. Now to my surprise I have another one landed today for driving over the limit in 20 mph zone. I had no idea. What a horrible surprise. I have been diving for 40 years with a clean licence. And now two in a row. What happens now? will I get another chance to pay £97 and go on another course or will teh police salp me with 3 points? Does anyone know? HELP!!!!! Read more

Nexxia Audio Solutions

I was amazed with its features inside the dual-zone climate control and electrically adjustable front seats (10-way, with memory setting for the driver’s seat) with heating and ventilation functions. The steering wheel is electrically adjustable and incorporates paddle shifts. On-board entertainment is provided by a 12-speaker audio system with CD player, DAB, Bluetooth and USB/Aux-In ports. This is worth buying. Read more

I've noticed VW decided to save some ££ when they designed the Up. On the driver's side door there is just one switch, for one electric window, the driver's window. The passenger gets one for their window, on their door. So, if the driver wants to open the passenger side window he/she can't. If you're going to carry out such brainless design you shouldn't be designing cars.

VW, wake Up and put both switches in the centre of the car, where they can both be reached. I know of at least a couple of manufacturers who have put all these switches on the centre console. Read more

Seen a few posts like this, which have raised more questions than answers! I currenlty drive a Ford Puma 2001 1.7 VCT with 123K on the clock. Says a lot for keeping up the service history! I work from home in Devon but drive to Portsmouth once a week. Other than that, the car is used for going up onto the moors and camping trips. I'm doing about 18K miles a year but it's mostly A roads (A35/A30/A31) and B roads so not necessarily motorway cruising like a lot of people doing high milage. I think a medium sized hatch would be the most practical car for me. Anything Mondeo/Passat sized is a pain on the narrow moors roads but I do want 5 doors and enough comfortable room for 2 adults in the back. I also want something that's comfortable on a 3 hours journey, "classy", very reliable and is going to last me a good 4 to 5 years. I don't rag cars but I do like to get a shift on sometimes.

Before I started doing my research I was dead set on a Diesel due to my higher than average annual mileage, but within my budget it sounds like I may be better with a medium sized petrol due to the potentially high maintainance bills related to '05 on diesel cars with DPF etc. That said, I've heard good things about VAG 1.9 PD engines but I'm not really after a big car. Would prefer a chain cam for reliability.... Read more

I've been reading this thread but haven't chipped in as yet.

The Civic sounds like a pretty good choice to me. A mate of mine drives one and he really likes it. He's 6ft 7 and he fits in very comfortably. They are nice looking cars....

needing help!

Car only done 40,000 miles and always been totally reliable. Passed MOT flying colours other than recommended new disc pads/brakes. Booked in for that the next week - prior to this the car flashed up "Engine Fault" and petered out. Top loaded into garage (have used before and it is the main dealer for Citroen in Surrey so normally v. reliable) ; looked at and "repaired" with a new starter coil. Had car back for an hour and same light came on, plus it put putted/huffed and seemed to have no oomph. Took back to garage; they checked out the cylinder by stripping it; said it could be starter motor and replaced that; also checked the throttle and cleaned it out. Had it for three days. It was returned on the Friday having been "extensively road tested". Drove no more than a few miles the next day when engine light came on again. This time the radiator also showed full temp/hot despite it being minus 10 and car not having driven far. Drove to safe place and it petered out again and would not restart. Rescue service guy said he thought it could be the gasket. Garage now telling me it needs a new engine, at 16 plus hours labour and goodness knows what cost (but defi a cost I can't afford!!) Any suggestions on recons/other garages etc. They are saying even if I source the correct engine that they will not give a guarantee (because it;s not new) and will also have to replace cam belt, water things and goodness knows what else "whilst the engine is accessible". HEEELLLPPP!! Read more

It does sound, from your description, that the engine has "siezed".

Second opinion time.

Not just Ford-GM has offered the Corvette for many years with two keys-one for you and the other offering restricted performance(for your partner or for the garage when it's being serviced). Read more

I am sure that amongst this happy throng of posters and threaders there will be a trained technician with the answer to my question. I intend to re-arrange our utility room. I need to move our washing machine to another location. The washing machine has only a cold fill connection. The new location has both hot and cold connections. I am thinking it would be more efficient to fill the washer with hot water we already have on storage, rather than cold and have the washer heat it up with an electric element. Would it affect the washing machine to do this? Our dishwasher is a hot fill device and has worked for over 20 years without a problem. Advice please. Concrete Read more

Thank you chrism and bromptonaut, very well made and sensible points. It just shows what first seems logical isn't always the case. I knew I would get the answer from the forum. I shall connect it as a cold fill after moving it. Many thanks to one and all. Cheers Concrete

I'm looking after my Dad's pride-and-joy Mercedes E270CDI 53 plate. He is terminally ill but has hopes of driving it again one day.I've driven it for 3mths with no problems. After a speedy 12 mile run across fast country roads on Saturday to my parents, on my return journey I experienced loss of power...foot down flat but only got to 30mph. After stopping and restarting all was fine. Now notice a loud intermittent ticking noise from engine - just like a clock - when i drive it. Last night the car made the same noise when switched off and parked on my drive. I've unplugged the battery to stop it. Could it be related to the car alarm? At times when ticking there is also a muted occasional blast of alarm siren! Would be so grateful for any advice as i don't want to worry my Dad at the moment. Thanks Read more

Thank you for those replies. I don't think i accidentally switched anything on, or off, I've been so careful when driving it! No warning lights came on. Will have a peer under the bonnet for the small battery. It looks like I'm going to have to bite the bullet and take it in to a MB garage....much £££££s i guess....
