With this new mot looming will bangernomics survive? I've managed to run old 'uns for years but with airbags and esp etc etc apparently to be targeted maybe my days are numbered! which cars do you think best to avoid huge mot bills in the future. apparently car and component manafacturers lobby the wonderful eec to stiifen up mots to ensure our safety,,,,,,,,,not of course to increase their profits.I want a petrol car with steel wheels, mimmum airbags, no esp or the like with some degree of comfort for me bad back. Does anyone know if this new city car will have a safe engine
eg that will not self destruct in the event of a cam belt failure or have a cam chain Read more
By safe, I take it you mean non interference. Not many of those around these days. You need either low compression or huge valve reliefs cut into the piston crowns. The former hurts efficiency, the latter emissions.
The car judders on and off when running at all speeds, quite jerky. The colour of the exhaust pipe is black. Mixture too rich? I have recent emissions test results if that helps? It passed MoT in November. Read more
Could be a lot of things. A 94 will probably have one o2 sensor and I'd suspect that first, along with crankshaft speed sensor or engine temperature sensor maybe, camhaft position sensor or MAF. Test result would help.

I'll get the required numbers when I go to view the car and inspect the paperwork
Hi,
I have a 2002 Astra with an 1.7 Isusu engine. It has been comfortable, economical, reasonably reliable and the parts needed have been reasonably priced. The Astra I had before that had the same engine, That car had to be scrapped at 135,000 miles because of engine failure.... Read more
If you get one the same colour you could save on road tax AND insurance!

I read this section avidly and then wonder if I still have the courage to get in a car and drive it on the roads! A couple of interesting comments today:
1. Cars getting bigger with every release in this case BMW 3 series. I agree entirely with the man who said if he wanted a 5 series he would have bought one. Anyone remember the size of the original Fiesta or Corsa compared with today's models? Why does anyone need enormous cars just to go to Tesco nowadays? I brought up a family with an original Mini, and as for the car my daughter drives........ ... Read more
Its not as bad as dealers who advertise it as 'top of the range' with 'all the extras.'
No. Its not. Its a mid range model with cloth seats and blank bits on the dash where a button should be.
Do all allroads have the air suspension. I,mm looking to buy one for about £4k. 120 to 140k miles the 2.5 tdi. The air suspension puts me off. Did any of the early models have sprung suspension?
The RR EAS is a fairly simple system is and reasonably easy to fix, air springs can be changed in 30 mins per corner. People give up on the EAS becase they cannot be asked to work out what has gone wrong or simply don't understand it. Most major faults are pretty well understood. The "suck my teeth that's gonna be expensive" brigade are really saying "I'm not really a mechanic, I'm a fitter - for that reason - I'm out".

looks a lot like a golf to me
Hi Everyone. I am in the process of trying to sell my car, and have received an email from someone who wants to buy it. Sounds good. However, the buyer wants to send a 'shipping agent' to pick it up and sort out the paperwork - Is it possible to sign all the paperwork without the actual buyer present, bearing in mind I wouldn't even know if the buyer is who he says he is?! He has offered to send a cheque covering the car and the cost for the shipping (I don't know if this means abroad), and 'any other costs', and has asked me to clear the cheque, take the cost of the car and then send the excess money to the shipping agent who will then come and pick it up. It all sounds a bit wierd to me, but can anyone see any problems with doing this? Thanks. Read more
Contact Trading Standards, they will be very interested in this case.
I doubt it, normally out of their geographical jurisdiction.

True.
