My car 1996 car, which I bought last summer, has cloth upholstery. I've cleaned it several times with upholstery shampoo. It is better than it was, but it isn't as good as it could be. I'm just wondering what other people use and how agressively they use it.

BTW I've used a clay bar on car windows. It's brilliant for creating smear free windows. I've yet to use it on bodywork. Read more

Thanks for all the suggestions. Clay bars are best for windows. Water is all I use as a lubricant. I don't think breathing in water vapour will be particularly harmful!

This is awfully daft to admit, but here goes.......

Went to a local dealer who i know, and discussed cars with him, he said "lets have look at yours" on the valuation on his computer, everything came up rosy, except for the HPI check. Outstanding finance on the vehicle from 5 months before I bought it!
Boy, did my face go red!

Anyway a quick call to HPI and 5 minutes later they called me back to say sorted.

See.... even little old me got caught out! and i had bought from a large national dealer.
Ooops. Read more

Hi,
It's a common misunderstanding that HPI ,is a panacea for all car problems.

The system depends on the correct information being supplied, and inputted.

I once complained that information they had listed was incorrect. Their response was the information available was for the benefit of the dvla and the finance companies.

The fee that I paid to access the information was a concession on their part to me .I didn't have a right to access the system or a guarantee that it would be accurate.

Arrogant ?

An amazing piece of model engineering.

At first I was puzzled by the fact it has conventional valves but is 2-stroke ( the camshafts' drive gearing is 1:1, not 1:2 as for 4-stroke) But compressed air drive would explain that....

In September last year I was notified by my insurer that I was involved in an "incident" on the Belgian motorway at a date & time that I was indeed on that motorway. I did not have any accident nor incident & my insurer is unable to get a Police report on this incident 7 months later. Meanwhile my file with insurers is marked "claim outstanding" and my premiums are uplifted as a result - It is no help to be told it will be refunded when it is all sorted out! The insurer - Equity Red Star - blame it all on Belgian Police inefficiency! Any advice or similar happening? Read more

My bmw 320d was unused for a month whilst I was recovering from surgery. Since starting to use it again the average fuel consumption over my typical mix of driving has increased by 10mpg from the figure it has been over the last 4 years. I've checked for binding brakes, no problems there and the performance is unaffected. Any ideas on the cause of the increase in fuel consumption most welcome please. Read more

Amount of fuel to refill to full against miles covered since last filled seems to tie in with a signifcant drop in mpg. Looks like I'll have to visit my local independent bmw guru for some diagnostics. Cheers.

In the Awards 2012 edition of What Car, they include an article on the new Mondeo. Although Ford haven't confirmed that their three cylinder one litre Ecoboost 123bhp engine will be going into the Mondeo, thay did confirm it is being tested in larger cars. What Car think that it is a foregone conclusion that engine will replace the current 1.6 litre 118bhp engine. Read more

My old man has a 3-pot engine - in his tractor. 2.5 litre 3-pot Perkins diesel, and the vibrations are shocking. It goes through exhaust stacks annually, bracketry is never done breaking around the engine due to metal fatigue, and pipes and wires chafing together.

I don't think I'd want a 3-pot near a car I was driving, thanks.

I have recently bought a 2nd hand German car through a dealer and am having a few problems. The dealer that I bought through is 130 miles away and the local dealer is 10 miles away.

So, looking at owners' forums I find that my 2 thermostats are liekly to not be working properly. Send in and dealer changes one of them (the easy one that even I could do!) and says all OK and up to temperature - told that the car gets to 95ºc but when asking that is when it is at a standstill and not tested on the roads. Anyway drive home the long way round and temp still not high enough. Call dealer and leave message. Get message back saying that talked to the techs and that the temp I am getting c. 80c is absolutely fine etc etc and no need to change the main stat (which opens at 88c).... Read more

Doubt it very much. Warranty claims are generally dealt with electronically by franchised dealerships directly with the vehicle manufacturer. As your man is an indie, he will have no way of claiming parts and labour costs.
