I would agree, the only thing being that the cost of having a clutch and DMF fitted is very often more than the car is worth, certainly the cars I run - unless like us you do it yourself.

I have a 2001 406 Hdi estate which I paid £950 for about a year and 11,000 miles ago, the clutch pedal has been high since I bought it but fortunately hasn't got any worse, its now just past the 200,000 mile mark and still drives like new. The engine hasn't missed a beat in that time, I have had to do the rear brakes and suspension links but that's about all. I don't know how much i would have to pay for a clutch fitted but I suspect it would be cheaper for me to buy another similar car....

My Granddaughter has a 1.1 Peugeot 106 "R" reg. When starting the car normally, as you turn the key a solonoid or something similar operates, you can hear it from the drivers position although it is not so audible from under the bonnet. The car starts no problem.

Occasionally when you try to start the car there is no solonoid noise and no start.... Read more

could it be the fuel pump ? or a connection to it
(under the back seat)

the usual noise heard could be the fuel priming,

Looking to buy a cheap Focus for a family member. Needs cheap insurance and ok fuel economy whilst not being too sluggish on hills etc.

Any recommends for certain engine size to look for as there seems to be quite a few to choose from?!... Read more

Iv'e just been reading the mpg section of Honest John. Don't take to much notice of trip computers before you have checked them out by noting down the TOTAL mileometer reading, filling the fuel tank up, doing the miles, topping the fuel tank up again, then deducting the last mileage reading from the present reading, then dividing the answer by the gallons used. Do this several times to check out the trip meter fully. My trip computer reads 5 mpg more than I actually get. 2.0 ltr, 130ps, Mk 3, Tdci, Mondeo, owner. Read more

My local garage advised that I need to get my cambelt replaced as I have nearly done 80,000 miles. However, I had a cambelt kit fitted 2 years ago during a major service and have only done about 10,000 miles since. Does it really need replacing? I know first hand the cost of not replacing it but I was quoted £260 and am not sure if the garage is just saying this because of the overall mileage on the car. Read more

If its an XUD diesel the replacement interval is 78,000 miles I believe so if its only done 10k it certainly shouldn't replacing. It would help if we knew the engine type.

Have you done a proper test by filling the tank to the brim and then refilling it after some mileage? Going by the gauge is never accurate unless you have a fuel computer of course.

If the car is burning excessive fuel you should notice black smoke from the exhaust, if the pump timing is retarded it will be difficult to start, over advanced it will be very noisy....

I've noticed an increase in the lowest & highest price per litre between filling stations within any given area, anything from 1-5p lt and the most expensive being the major oil companies. I recon they should be able to under cut supermarkets but instead charge more. As they produce, refine, wholesale and retail and in so doing make a profit at each stage. The supermarkets buy their fuel on the spot market a product of the majors and then retail it less than the majors who will only relax their price when they are too near an aggresive supermarket. The only difference in the fuel is addatives they all put in and vary from brand to brand. I believe all fuel has a BS No. so there will not be a wide variation except the addatives used, not enough to justify the higher price. Read more

Both petrol and diesel will have water in it - the moisture content of air condenses on the inside of the car fuel tank and runs down to the bottom where the pickups are, as both diesel and petrol are lighter than water. Some diesel have a water trap built into the fuel filter which needs emptying at service time.

Although cold winter air can hold less moisture than warm summer air, the colder temperatures increase the rate of condensation in winter. Older steel fuel tanks are worse for condensation than modern plastic fuel tanks. Keeping the tank fairly full reduces condensation by reducing the amount of air in the tank....

I would forget all these fault codes as these are not relevant to your problem.Take a close look at the charging system voltage and I would suspect that the alternator is is trouble.hth
