I purchased this car with 9777 on the clock in January with 2 stamped services, I have now put another 20k on the clock and am experiancing lots of oil / soot spots on the rear door, I put it in for a 37.5k Service as recommended by the main dealer which he thought would rectify the problem, one new turbo breather pipe and lots of serious money later I have a new stamp in the book but still have this mess and all the MD can offer is "well it is a diesel and they are prone to this type of thing" I have spoken to other owners and so far nobody has said they experiance the same thing. Help please. Read more

Firstly you need to ascertain whether it is soot or oil or both. You would only normally get exhaust deposits if it was smoking badly and that would affect your fuel consumption. Oil leaking from the engine could be deposited on the rear door so have a good look underneath for signs of leakage.

Hi, This is a first time post for me.

I have a 2005 fully serviced, 58K mileage, VW Golf Plus. I am suffering RUST, both front wings have had to be replaced and the rear wings "fixed"... Read more

Common and well publicised problem. Check out VW owner forums for good sound advice on how to deal with VW as it is invariably a perforation issue covered by a 12 year anti perforation warranty. However VW will jump through hoops denying it and fobbing people off with warranty rejections as not main dealer serviced etc. I had the front wing rust issues on an 05 Passat and got 100% contribution 2 days after a 50% offer. Have to say VW Customer Services were very responsive and prompt!

My 1999 Vectra has no power. Battery is okay but there is no power to turn engine, no lights on dash, no central locking. It's as if the battery has been stolen. Fuses under the steering wheel seem okay. Is there another main fuse somewhere or a Relay? Read more

Peter.N.

Check the leads from the battery, one should go to earth, make sure it does and the bolt is tight, maybe on the engine. If that's OK follow the + lead as far as you can and see what its connected to. A Haynes manual should give you some sort of wiring diagram.

The X300 and X308 XJs were more reliable than the Merc S Class, Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series, only Lexus bettered Jaguar for reliability in the class for almost a decade. Under the skin the X300 and 308 were all Jaguar (tarted up BLMC-era XJ40 actually) - no Ford there. The only Ford engines used are the V6s and the (Ford/PSA) diesels. Of course I'm ignoring the Mondeo in a party dress - although it's a perfectly good car but not a proper Jag. Reliablility dipped with the X350 XJ (the ali bodied car) but were still acceptably reliable and no worse than a 7 series. As for engineering the Jag AJV8 was the finest V8 engine in the world at release and is still up there now. It was a Jaguar design despite Ford trying to claim credit after they realised how good it was - relegating their hidiously-expensive inhouse small V8 project to the truck division.

With all the rusty and broken-down 1996-2005 Mercs lying around I'm surprised people still stick up for them....

When I got the car the door insides were filthy so I gave them a good scrub. Looked good.

But soon the fabric lifted in bubbles, may have shrunk a bit.... Read more

Great idea, thanks. The bubbles are about six inches away from the door edges though, so I might just leave it for now, and let it get worse, as I might make it worse whatever I do.

I have a 2002 corsa c 1.0 12V Z10Xe engine with 96000 on the clock. Over the past six months the oil level has not dropped at all on the dipstick (touch wood), but i want to know if the piston rings are likely to start to fail soon due to the high mileage of the engine. I usually rev upto about 3000rpm when changing gear and cruise in fifth at between 2500 and 3000 rpm, only going upto about 4000rpm on the rare occasions that i venture onto the motorway. How long should the rings last and is this high mileage bad for such a small engine? Read more

I would agree with the above, I think a lot of the problems with modern engines are due to the extended oil change intervals.

Hello,

The blower in my Citroen Xsara 1.9 diesel 1998 is only working intermitently. It either works upon starting (usually when set to full) or not at all. Can anyone help?... Read more

I had a 1998 Xantia with the same problem. There is a connection above the passenger footwell as I remember, I seem to recall it was a spade connector which gave exactly the same symptoms that you describe. It just needed a crimp to make it a tighter fit on whatever it was attached to

A friend has just bought the above car and while driving it home the light on the dash came on to show a door was open. She stopped and it was the boot. She closed it firmly and it latched fine but later did the same again. I asked her if when she heard it come open it was the same noise as when she unlocked the car with the fob and she said yes. It seems something is triggering the tailgate release (there is a release button for it on the dash) Is this a common fault on these cars? Thanks Stuart Read more

I will try and find out! Thanks for the pointer!
