My brakes felt spongy, so took to my local Ford garage for a diagnosis. They removed the rear wheels and drums stating the cylinders were leaking. They phoned me to say that I also need to replace the stub axle because when they took the nut off they found it was cross threaded and cannot be put back on.

I thought that the recommended way of removing the rear drum on a focus, to get at the brake mechanism, was to remove the 4 bolts which hold the sub axle on the backing plate, thereby saving undo/redo the hub nut, and damaging the bearing, is this correct and would I have any comback on the garage for not following this procedure? That's certainly what the Haynes manual recommends, so it's the best option for a DIYer (I did this many times on my old Focus) but I'm not sure what the standard procedure would be at a Ford garage....

Hi, after running my car for only a few miles, it smells very hot when i get out of the car. It's not steam, it's a hot metallic smell. I recently had a new radiator fitted, no difference! the garage then suggested a new thermostat, again no difference except the temp guage inside the car takes much longer to reach optimum working temp (about 10 miles). I can't afford to keep throwing money at this problem. Has any kind soul any answers? thank you. Read more

My Fiat Punto 75 (R-1997) wouldn't idle again this morning. It started fine as normal but would then immediately stall unless I kept my foot on the accelerator.

I had to get to work so I drove it the 7 mile journey stalling it several times in the process. Just before I got there the issue corrected itself and it idled perfectly at the last few sets of traffic lights.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time it has happened, it is an intermittent problem. I'd be very grateful for any suggestions.

A month ago I sold a car I had owned since November, during that time I did 30,000 miles and had the car serviced according to the manufactures requirements. it had an extended service with intervals specified by the cars computerd, (which actually worked out about every 12 months). During my ownership th car was trouble free.

When I sold it the purchasers took the car for an extended test, probably for about an hour.... Read more

As a private seller the only outside chance a private buyer has of suing you is if you misrepresented the vehicle that you sold in your advert-and a pretty slim chance they have of success with that as well at 146k miles.

I have finally snapped! when I bought the car from a large national dealer, the pdi check wasn't done there were faults and it was delivered with 4 tyres with dangerously low tyre pressures. The next dealer fixed the mirror but that needed two 60 mile trips, then the aircon and oil leak were fixed and at my request an oil change was done and the wrong grade used, ok, refunded and done elsewhere, then following service specified grade, but thw wrong spec used, so oil change done again. Out of 3 services 1 not done, 2 done incorrectly. I will not ever have the vehicle in a franchised dealership again! I spent many years in the motor trade in switzerland and I never saw this. When i get my next car it will be with a 5 or 7 year warranty, will pay for the service pack and then let the dealer get on with it. I have spent years trying to defend uk dealers but have finally had enough! Read more
